Can a Malamute be taught to come when called?

Hello. I have a new Alaskan Malamute puppy. I have been reading tons of websites about Malmutes and all of them say that this breed will not come when called. I wanted to ask other Mal owners - is it possible to teach a Mal to come when called and be reliable off leash??

YES !!! Eli has sailed through obedience training . he will be starting advanced obedience next month . he responds well to both verbal and hand signals , on and off leash . Our trainer wants to possibly work with us on tracking as well . Mals are very bright and can learn anything . The biggest challenge is to keep them from getting bored. I keep it a " game " with Eli .

Of course it is possible. I may be very stubborn, but my mom has learned to have patience with me and not give up. Sometimes I won't come if I don't see any benefit to it (like a treat), but my mom tells me that I have to learn this so I can be safe if I ever run out in the street or something like that. What's a street? She uses treats and a leash which she can let out to be VERY long (like 45 feet) and she kind of reels me in when she uses this loud voice and says "Jaxon, COME NOW." Then I KNOW I'd better get my butt back there.

Koda's recall stinks but, that's because my husband is ruining all the training I've done with Koda, not because Koda won't come. I had Koda to a point where he would come and he passed his CGC and Rally-O courses but, since my darling hubby has been getting involved and not listening to how I trained Koda, his recall has gone to hell in a handbasket he thinks everything is a chase me game now. Which stinks because we just started SAR training. So my advice regarding Mals, never for a second take for granted that you have a good dog, always practice everyday with training. I gave Koda some time away from training thinking he would burn out if I pushed him. Jokes on me, Mals don't really burn out when it comes to tasks. Koda, like most Mals, is not hyper-sensitive to whether or not I'm annoyed with him, he gets a little embarrassed and then forgets all about it, so while I was giving Koda a vacation from listening to me he was learning how to not listen to commands. But it can be done, easily...just be consistant.

Mystique

You want me to- do what???

I'd say yes... and no...

In most cases Mystique will come. But then when she wants to do something we don't want her to - like take a stroll down the street by herself. You can almost see her thought process - should I or shouldn't I - hmmm...

She is back in obedience now. She comes perfectly there. Hopefully the repetition will finally pay off.

Mals are stubborn - don't give in. I remember when we were first walking her. She would sit down and not budge. We either dragged/pushed her along or carried her. Finally she just realized that no matter what she was walking so she just went. We have no problems with that since she was a puppy.
