I have a 3 month old Malamute & she is obsessed with her water bowl. If the bowl is down & she's unsupervised she will drink till its dry. We have been monitoring her water intake (per our vet), but when the bowl is on the counter she will go & look up at the counter, sit there and wait. I have a 5 yr old retreiver & I would love to leave the bowl down all day, but with the malamute I can not. Does anyone else have this with their Malamute?

This seems to be a breed trait...

We ended up getting one of those giant waterers because we were tired of refilling it constantly. We put a ziploc bowl in it so he can't just throw his head in and go to town. We've also taught him "enough" so he'll stop. Otherwise it's like he's completely lost in the water and would drink forever.

Sitka is our 3rd Mal and the only one that has been obsessed with water. She actually lays down and curls herself around the water bowl and drinks it dry. She thinks ice cubes are treats!

Mine also loves water and will sometimes splash it out of the water bowl. He plays with water hoses and in the pool and on occasion I've seen him drink it until its dry. Do you live in a dry climate (I didn't pay attention on prev. page)? Also, it's good that you're monitoring per your vet as high thirst can also mean diabetes or another ailment. I do think it's a significant breed trait, though.

Mya , our Sibe / Mal mix , has a different trick . If we don't watch her she will try and "dig " in her water bowl.
