Arrival Story:
ive always liked animals and grew up with everything but a dog. i was the one that pet sat and walked all the neighbors. i moved to san diego for grad school and after much thought decided that i wanted a dog of my own, one i didnt have to give back at the end of the day. i knew i wanted to adopt one and not buy one from a breeder. i did alot of research and thought that the italian greyhound would be the perfect fit. i spent several months looking for one in shelter listings and rescues. at this time i also saw many other small dogs that might work. i was getting impatient waiting for what i though would be the "appropriate breed" and there were several that i thought might be a possibility and that i wanted to meet at the rescue "Hearts for Hounds" in long beach. so i called bonnie, the founder, and we made arrangements to meet. my friend drove up with me for support. we get to the vets office and the dogs i came to meet i didnt feel any sort of connection with and i didnt want to make a hasty decision since this was a committment for the rest of the dogs life. i think bonnie sensed this and she said that she had one more dog that she could show me. she brought out this neurotic big eared red dog. this dog, autumn, wanted nothing to do with me and was barking and fighting the leash and had glassed over eyes as she showed leash aggression towards all the other animals coming and doing in this vets office. i guess she had been adopted and returned several times for behavioral problems and now she was being boarded at the vets. i took her for a short walk and tried to get her to acknowledge me but nothing was there... not with her anyway. but for me, i felt a connection. my friend thought i was nuts when i told bonnie that id like to adopt "autumn" and to be quite honest my rational side thought i was nuts also, as i heard the words come out of my mouth. we did the paper work and a few hours drive later i was back home in san diego. it took about 3 months of my total patience to get her to stop submissively peeing... my bed pillows being her favorite spot anytime i raised my voice. she had so many issues and was obviously beaten at some point. she is very sensitive and needy and yet very independent. it took alot of socialization at the dog park everyday but she eventually began to trust people other then myself and now she will walk up to a stranger and give them kissies. its been a few years and she still has some issues but she is my Princess and i have since renamed her Zelda. in addition, zelda started my interest in the breed and since her i have worked to rescue and rehabilitate as many as possible. they are often misunderstood and end up in animal control when owners do not take the time to properly train them or give them an outlet. i believe that miniature pinschers, like all breeds, should be researched before getting one
