The Random Ramblings of a Shetland Sheepdog

Of Food and Obedience

I will always come when called by the scent of Blue Dog Bakery. It would be a mistake not to obey with a box of their treats sitting on the counter.

But what if I'm called without the benefit of food? Will I still come if Mom calls? Of course! I'll be a good little guy, and come. Crossing my fingers the whole way that she'll have a strip of chicken jerky hidden in her pocket.

If nothing else, I'll get a fuss of "Good boy!" and a pat on the head, and that makes it all worth it. I love nothing more than pleasing my mom. I suppose you could call me a Mama's boy, but you know, bad dogs don't get treats.

Discovery!

I just found out something big. You know how humans throw away whatever food they don't consider absolutely perfect? They do, honest! I know, I was shocked, too! But they throw out animal fat, dry bread, apple cores, and any food that's been in storage for too long! Finicky, I know.

It's a shame to waste that good food, so I followed them to place where they dispose of it. Its a large, white container, similar to the kind they store dog food in. And, best of all, it's actually quite easy for me to break into. I can't believe I haven't discovered this before!

Wait, what's that? Oh.

Turns out, I'm not allowed to eat the wonderful goodies of the large white container. Why, why, why!? It's so unfair.

Forget what you saw. There has been no great discovery.

Snow!

I live in a place where we don't get much snow. When the weather dude says it's going to snow, we get a half-inch of slush that melts an hour after it stops snowing. It's just cold and wet and yucky and gross. This time, it's deep and dry and fluffy and fun to run and play in! Yay!!!

It's Cold, too.

Mom let me out to play earlier today. I started shivering and being frozen and such, so she got me a shirt to wear. It helped a little, but it got tangled up in my feet because it wasn't quite tight enough. She said if we lived somewhere that got snow like this all the time, she would get me a real jacket. But we don't.

I'm short. The snow came up to my elbows in some places! I couldn't run like normal. I had to hop like a rabbit.

Snow tastes good! Like water, but colder! It was fun to run around and dig in the snow because it was so soft and poofy and dig-inable.

I like snow.

My Day = Bath + Food

Today, I was given a bath. Yuck. Now, swimming is one thing. You get to move around, splash, and have fun. In a bath, you have to hold still while cold, soapy water is rubbed and scrunched all through your fur.

So, after thirty minutes of brushing (so my fur wouldn't clog the drain), I was dumped in four inches of ice water, while mom poured water on my hair. Then, after having a glob of blue gunk smeared all over me, I got soaked with more water to "rinse off".

But I got my revenge later. My family went of shopping, and came home with a pig ear and a bag of beef jerky, for me! But, they decided I wouldn't get to eat any of my jerky until the next day, so I grabbed my pig ear and chewed it in my crate.
Fifteen minutes later, Mom comes into my room, and sees that I've stolen the jerky bag and eaten all of it. Yay!

So, even though I did get a bath, it was a pretty good day, don't you think?

What does the fall mean to YOU?

What does fall mean to you? To me, it means awesome food! Hey, It's pumpkin pie and turkey season, you know. I get all the leftovers, because Sammy refuses to eat table scraps, the little weirdo.

It also means that the trees drop their little toys on the ground. Then your owner rakes 'em into a pile, and you jump in them and tear around.

It means birds and squirrels like crazy! Today, a gigantic flock of noisy blackbirds decided to invade the neighbor's property. I barked. A lot. Teehee.

It's Autumn, Baby!

Cats are Weird

It's not that I don't LIKE Sammy. I would love to make friends with her. But whenever I try to introduce myself, she runs away. I don't get it. What'd I ever do to her?

She, on the other hand, isn't always very nice. Today she sat just beyond my reach, and strted teasing me. I started barking at her, until Mom came and made her go outside and stop teasing me. Then she gave me a walk and we practiced training in the yard for awhile. I like people more than cats. Cats are weird, but cool. I guess.

The best treat EVER!

Mom has gotten me plenty of different kinds of dog treat before. Snausages, Beggin Strips, Pupcorn, People Crackers, Milkbones, pressed rawhide Pupsicles, Red Barn bones, Wellbars- you name it. But now she has the first treat that is both healthy and delicious. Home made ones!

She found a recipe online that other dogsters recommended. It uses finely crushed spearmint and unbleached whole wheat flour, with no sugar or meat. She said she didn't think I would like them because they sounded so bland. Well, she was wrong. I LOVED them, much more than I liked any commercial treat she's ever tried, plus, they're cheaper and healthier. What's not to love?

Later this week, she made some with peanut butter and molasses. They were good, and I liked them even more than the mint ones, but she would like them to be less sugary. Aren't people strange?
