Protective behavior?

Last night I was taking Max out for his last walk of the evening. When we first went out all the neighbor dogs were barking up a storm and this ruffled Max's fur (nothing new there). So we walked around the house like we normally do but I noticed his behavior changed a little (by this time the other dogs were silent and everything outside was very quiet) he would venture away from me a little bit, but then come right back, which I didn't think anything about at first, then as we continue on around he would stand in front of me, agian I didn't think anything about it at first, but then as I go to walk around Max he does it again, he stops right in front of me, that's when I realized my little mini was body blocking me, but from what?
Even though I didn't see or hear anything, Max sure did and he was trying to protect me, so needless to say we went right back in the house. Normally on our walks Max is way out infront of me, but not last night, even on the way back to our house he was right next to my side.

Once in the house he was pretty much back to normal, except every once in a while he acted as if he heard something outside that got his attention, then he'd go back to lazying it up next to me on the couch.
