Arrival Story: I was babysitting my boss' dog, Gertie, and I was taking her back to her house one night around 11 PM, when a dog approached us in the parking lot. My boss had told me that there was a stray in the area, but I was through taking in strays and I really wasn't going to go out of my way to pick one up! Anyway, the two dogs seemed to know each other and didn't fight, so I went inside to put Gertie in her crate for the night. I put her in the crate and turned around to leave, and the stray dog was standing in the middle of my boss' living room!
I thought, "I better get him out of here right away! My boss would have a fit if he thought a stray dog was in here depositing dirt and worms!" I went to get the dog and realized that he was just a skeleton with eyeballs. I snuck him some of Gertie's food.
I took him home and realized that he was badly infested. At the vet's office the next day, the vet tech told me that she had never seen a worse case of infestation in all the many years they had been there. She snuck me a free bottle of super-fast flea and tick killer, because I had brought them so much business over the years with all the stray dogs that I had taken in.
Fido let me wash him many times and was always a super good dog. He wanted to be the alpha male and challenged my other male dog a number of times. With so many strays (dogs and cats) in the house, I had to eventually give away several. I put it in a higher power's hands: I wanted to keep Fido, but was sure that he would go before the others. To my shock and amazement, everyone who adopted from me wanted the other animals, so I still have Lassie and Fido left.
