Arrival Story:
Claude was just a month shy of his 2nd birthday when he came to live with us. My daughter and I had moved out in the boonies on 35 acres and a couple of miles from a prison. I decided we needed a dog for protection. I didn't want an aggressive dog. I wanted a dog that could look intimidating without having to be. A dog that could make some one, say an escaped prisoner, freeze in his tracks. I read up a bit (not near enough) on a some breeds and decided the bullmastiff bred to roam estates and deter poachers was just the dog to fit the bill. Unfortunately no one read the job description to Claude whose registered name is Buster but whose previous owner said he'd always been called Clod ... as in that big dirt clod that never moves. 155lbs of teddy bear but all he really has to do is stand, perk up his ears & drool and most people who haven't been introduced roll up their windows, lock their doors & honk.

Summer 2008 - surgery to remove excess skin over eyes Dec. 2008 - 134lbs. (down 21 lbs and 9 more to go)

Life in the Slow Lane - the Diary of Claude the Bullmastiff

Mind you I've been cooped up not wanting to go outside for 3 days now because of the ice storm. Today was day 4 and the start of the big thaw.

Somewhere around 7a.m the pup starts whining to go out. So Ma gets up and heads to the living room.

And OMDog! … there lying in the middle of her living room carpet is her worst nightmare … a super - sized stinky pile of Claudie poo.

She goes from not quite half awake to screaming maniac in a heartbeat.

And says lots of not nice words.

I tuck my tail & head for the door … so does Ruger … Chance heads for the bedroom … the pup cocks his head in his crate … and Ma goes to get the cleaning supplies.

It takes half a roll of paper towels & a can of Mask-the-Scent-of-Doggie-Poo deoderizer.

I'm in the dog house now ... good thing it's warmed up.

Way cool. Usually when PeggyLu has to go somewhere me & the boys are booted out in the yard. But today it was cooold & windy & Chance & Ruger were going with her so she put the little one in Chance's crate in the back room because he'd had an "accident" and his crate was all stinky.

I was told to join him in the room as his pupsitter.

It's the same room Chance has been using while he recouperates and he'd left a big bowl of dog chow so I polished that off for him and laid down next to the pup-in-a-crate and took a nice snooze.

I've been feeling and acting like a whole new dog since my face lift. I got my eyes done and not only did it smooth out my wrinkles, I don't have anymore eye infections. It sure has made me feel a bunch better ... they were pretty painful. And old Doc H has got me on a diet. He said 155 lbs. was waaay too much weight for me to be carryin' around. He wants me down to 125. I'm working on it ... I'm down to 134 and running & playing like a big ol' pup.
