02/16/12 Puff Darby and the Leprechaun

I was outside in my backyard when I was startled to see a small man who was less than 24” tall with thick, wiry red hair and full beard and was clad in a green coat looking down at me from the top of my hill. “What the woof” I said as I started barking at him and hobbled up the hill as fast as my little legs would carry me? Just as I reached the old man he disappeared. I sniffed and sniffed the empty air wondering if maybe I imagined that I saw someone, but my nose picked up a strange scent that I have never encountered before, thus verifying that I had seen something. As I turned to go back down the hill I again spied the strange little guy, but this time he was hiding behind the cypress bush over by the fence line.

“Hey you” I barked! “What are you doing in my yard?” but like earlier he disappeared before I could get close to him. I stood there transfixed wondering how this little old man was evading me. As I stood looking at the spot where he had been standing, I felt something hit the center of my back and bounce off. I turned as fast as I could, but remember pals, I am mobile challenged with the spinal injury I have, but when I tuned around there was no one there. When I looked on the ground I spotted a gold coin by my feet.

As I was getting ready to move the gold coin with my snout I heard “Leave that alone, it’s mine”, but it wasn’t Coco who was saying that. Everyone knows everything belongs to Coco and all day long all I hear is “mine, mine, mine” as she tries to claim everything around her, but she was in the house and the voice that said that wasn’t hers. I turned towards the voice and again saw the little old man, but this time he was standing over by the lemon tree.

“Who are you and what are you doing in my yard” I asked?

“Me name is Conor and I’m a Leprechaun” he answered.

“What is a leprechaun?” I asked.

“Why it’s the greatest thing in the world. We make the gold that is found at the end of the rainbow” he answered.

“Okay, but you still haven’t answered why you are in my yard.”

“I was chasing the rainbow that was in the sky and sort of lost my way and some of the gold coins that was in the pot I was carrying” Conor said. “I need to find the lost gold coins and then I will be on my way.”

“Do you want to help me find them?” Conor asked.

“Well as long as I don’t have to leave my yard because momma will be really mad at me if I do” I replied.

“The coins I dropped are in your yard someplace along with some four leaf clovers. All you have to do is help me gather them up and then I can continue on my way” Conor said.

“Well that’s easy enough so I will help you find them.”

Conor and I walked all over my yard and we gathered up all of the coins we could find.

We collected quite a bit of coins and four leaf clovers before Conor announced that we had found all that had been dropped and that he was now ready to continue on to find the end of the rainbow.

He thanked me for my help and before he left he gave me a nice shiny gold coin and said “May joy and peace surround you,
contentment latch your door,
and happiness be with you now
and bless you evermore! “

WowZer Puff, you are a lucky boy! To see and help a Real Leprechaun...He gave you a gold coin of your own! Did you hide it, so Miss Coco doesn't add it to her My,my,my collection???

What a pawsome day you had little pal........I've been going NUTS over something under the decking steps. Gma got on her knees and put her face on the ground. Said,no bunny,no kittens...probably a Mouse,but she didn't see anything??? I just won't give it a REST! Do you think, what I sniffed is a Conor? Could I have a Leppie guy in my yard?????

Wow! And here I thought Ebby was a 'leppychaun! I 'spose leppychauns do exist and Ebby isn't one cause she'd NEVER give up her stuff! Not a treat, not a coin...nuttin'!
