Arrival Story: Let's see, where to start with this angel! Well, Annie is a female Pug/Beagle mix or otherwise known as a Puggle. I love her to death, but unfortunately she had a rough start. Her paperwork says that she started her life in Arkansas. I've looked up everything in Prattsville, Arkansas, but I have not been able to find a breeder. Annie is a great dog and she didn't deserve to have 3-4 homes, but I'm glad that she ended up with us. A bit of a description of Annie is that she's twenty-five pounds of a little black shadow. (Yes, she serves her purpose as my shadow. ;D ) She has floppy velvety ears, white splotches on her chin, chest, and paws, and an underbite. At the first glance, Annie's underbite was a deformity. After these years of owning such an amazing dog, though, I see it as a beauty. She's different from other dogs; she's special. ************ ARRIVAL: I got Annie after my beautiful tan tabby or "Tiger Kitty" was hit by a car in November of 2007. I was devistated because Chester was a beautiful friend. In our old house where we had Chester, there were woods in the back yard and Chester would stay at my heels and hike through the woods with me. He responded to calls, knew tricks, and made himself a perfect "dog." He was missing for a week before I found out the dreaded....................... Now for Annie. She was the most beautiful and infinitely the best surprise early Christmas present in the world. After a month of grieving, my mom brought me a little black bundle of joy. She attempted to tie a red bow around her neck, but "Naila" at the time wouldn't have it, BOL! Annie's first trip to our house wasn't pretty. She had an ACCIDENT or a couple accidents in the car, so my mom had quite a difficulty pulling over and cleaning everything up on the highway... Our car smelled for forever after that too, BOL! Well, after a few weeks, we still couldn't figure out a name. Finally, my dad said Annie and I knew that it was perfect. ***** TRAINING: When we first got Annie, all she knew was sit, ALL she knew was sit! She didn't respond to Naila which was her previous name, she wasn't house-trained, she had no recall, and she couldn't even lay down. While we lived in my old house, I only bothered to teach her to lay down. Her training of recall and eventually over 120 tricks and commands began when we moved because I was sick of her misbehaving. Annie's training led to me starting my own dog training business and helping tons of friends, family, and strangers with their doggy-problems. Annie is a forever companion, an answer to prayer, and a dream come true. I'll love her till I die!********* PREVIOUS OWNERS: My guess is that Annie's previous owners were simply fed up with her behavior problems. Either that or her underbite. :(( All Annie needed was someone to see past her outside and even part of her inside, and see the willingness and passion to learn, and I believe with all my heart that she's recieved that here. ********** HEALTH: Looking at Annie's paperwork, I see that she's had several dewormings and a surgery at a young age. She didn't get fixed till she got to us, so I'm not quite sure what the surgery was, but I know that she's happy and healthy now, and that's all that matters.
Bio: Hi! I'm Annie! I'm a very talented girl with plenty over 100 tricks and commands, but I can also be very serious. Right now it's my duty to watch over Mama... Now, if any bad-guys see this lil' 25 lbs girl, they'd laugh! I'm concerned about everything that happens here and I know Mama is too... I think I pick it up from her! Anyway, I know that I need to watch out fur her and my kids also that play outside. My kids are of young age and like to hang out outside. I always sit on the couch by my window and watch out fur ANYTHING that could happen! My tackles stick up when they cross the road, I growl (yes, I growl) if another dog walks into the cul-de-sac, and when I'm watching out there, they like to use me to help play hide-and-seek because I know it's my job to track them down. I don't think I'd ever be aggressive at a person; that's just totally against my life. Mama could be if I told her, though! ********************************** * A bit more about me is that I just recently started Agility. I started it on September 2nd, 2009. It's an agility set that includes a pawz box, one adjustable jump, one open tunnel, and one set of 6 weaving poles. Mama owns her own dog training business and sometimes has to use that set fur other dogs, but she's sure to run me on it at least once everyday. So far, my best time is in 9.1 seconds (September 13th, 2009) but I'll bet I'll beat that tomorrow! I also like to hunt since I'm part Beagle. It's one of my most favorite things to do! If Mama says no, though, I know that that word means and I'm always sure to listen!

She's picture perfect on a leash and I've taught her to stand from the down possition. She trusts me enough now to let me hold her like a baby. 100!+ Tricks! Isn't she smart? Three or four different distant commands. Touch it to a new extent and leave it to a new extent too. I've been good. I guess the rest isn't tricks, but I can do various Seeing eye dog jobs. I literally walk Mama around the neighborhood with her eyes closed the whole time and then we get back home! She says I'm so amazing. I responds to many different words like "if you wanna come inside you gotta sit" or "do you wanna go for a WALK?" And with my new Keyboard Mama taught me to paw at the keys. It took a LONG time but Mama also taught her to bark by the door if I wants to come in. I also know various weaves, spins, and dance moves which look PAWSOME with music! I love going to get Mama's keys too. She'll throw them ALL THE WAY across the room and I need to go and run to get them! I like it a lot. Tasty treats from carrying and dropping some small jingling thing in my mouth and dropping it in Mama's hand! Yum Yum!******************************
Yes, it's Mama's Barkday, and on Groundhog's day? I had an entry about this last year... There's a day of the year fur groundhogs and not fur dogs? I don't get it, but there's a lot of things I don't get...
Anyway, Mama has plans she can't break today and tonight, so she's all mine from about 12:00- 7:00 tonight! Whoo hoo! I'll be having tons of fun today with Mama, so I'll bet I won't be online too much.
Here's an article from http://www.contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/story/dog-whispe rer-sued-over-animal-cruelty-claims_05_05_2006
Read through the whole thing!!!
CESAR MILLAN, the host of hit National Geographic Channel series THE DOG WHISPERER, is being sued over claims a dog was left bruised and bleeding at his pet clinic. Producer FLODY SUAREZ alleges his Labrador GATOR was nearly choked by a collar and forced to run on a treadmill at Millan's Los Angeles-based Dog Psychology Centre, resulting in painful injuries. Suarez claims medical costs have so far reached $25,000 (GBP13,500). He has filed suit for breach of contract, fraud, animal cruelty and intentional infliction of emotional distress. According to legal papers filed at the Los Angeles Superior Court, Gator had to be rushed to a vet an hour after being dropped off at Cesar Millan's Dog Psychology Centre. The dog was reportedly "bleeding from his mouth and nose, in an oxygen tent gasping for breath with severe bruising to his back inner thighs." The Dog Psychology Centre was unavailable to comment and a spokesman for the National Geographic Channel said it had not been served with a lawsuit.
Here is Mama's thoughts placed out bluntly... She isn't doing anything to harm his motivation, but this is more like thoughtful criticism (might have just made something up...)
Point #1: We are totally against the shock collar training methods as well as the choke chain methods. Both do damage to the dogs' neck in some way (People say to put the shock collar on your bicept and see how it feels, but the reality is that the neck is much softer and tender, especially on dogs!). In the second video link of the previous entry, there's a video clip on YouTube of Cesar treating a dominant dog (in all the wrong ways) using a choke chain. In this clip, Cesar Milan claims the dogs is calmer and/or relaxed towards himself after he has finished working with it. Actually, the dog is almost unconscious due to asphyxiation after being strangled. It's a scary thought that people think this is okay.
Point #2: Why do Cesar's methods seem so effective? -- The "Pack Leader" method has many successful ways about it. Always treating yourself as the leader of the pack and the more important party is important, but the "Pack Leader" method leaves out all love, affection, and positive reinforcement. If a dog isn't properly reinforced for the behavior, doing the right thing doesn't seem proper to the dog. While Cesar is a professional at this method and his dogs do respond well, it's not something tha tpeople can learn and perfect from just watching the show which brings people to do the wrong things.
Point #3: What does Cesar do in the show that you DON'T see? -- In the first link, there's a dog that's "red zone" against cats. The problem is, Cesar doesn't outwardly say that he's using the shock collar. He hides the transmitter in his pocket and when the dog has it's spaz attack, it's really being extremely shocked (once the dog hides it's head under the chair to try to escape from the collar!). This aggressive use of training could easily be overrun by positive reinforcement any day (the dog goes and tries to bite it's owner as an after-effect from the shock!). Why doesn't Cesar show the shock collar? Is he ashamed of it?
Point #4: In that episode, what did Cesar do to try to get the dog comfortable around the cat? He puts the cat in a crate and "psycologically" works with the dog. He brings the cat closer (as if that helps!), gets the cat all riled up, and causes anxiety and aggression from both animals. The cat attacks the owner in this episode, and so does the dog. Cesar eventually has the dog ignore the cat... why? Because the dog considers the cat a bad thing. It can't run from the cat (leash), it can't hide (open room), it can't leave it alone or show affection (cat is riled up and aggressive), and it can't get the motivation of affection because "pack leaders rarely give affection!" That totally messes up the phsycological stand point!!! Positive reinforcement would train the dog that the cat is a good thing other then vice versa...
Point #5: Cesar's way of the Choke Chain -- Cesar is sure to keep the choke chain at the very top of the neck- the most sensative part. Does it hurt the dog? Yes. Could it choke them? Yes. If you put it on, could you breath properly? no... especially if you're pulling away from it with all your might. In a dog's mind when all else fails, you retreat and regroup yourself for the fight. Dogs need space, time, positive reinforcement, repetition, and love to pull through training.
With these five points, do you see my dilemmas with simply chokes, shocks, and just these two episodes that are on YouTube? I highly DO NOT recommend Cesar's methods. There's another way: Victoria Stilwell. Look her up and learn more about Positive Reinforcement. Mama and I will fill you in on any questions, so feel free to ask.
