Land of Hope and Dreams

The train platform was cold on his paws. He waited patiently, uncertain what lay ahead. His heart was filled with sadness, but at the same time filled with years of love and companionship.

The kind of love that is pure, unwavering, innocent and so very strong.

In the distance the sound of a train horn sounded. The stem rose into the air as it came rolling into the station. The vibrations sent tremors through the platform floor up into his paws and into his legs.

The train came to a stop. In front of him was a door.

The sound of metal clicking in sequence resulted in his ears perking up and his head tilting to one side. His eyes focused on the handle of the door. With a sudden thrust the door swung open.

Standing in the doorway was a gingered-coloured Chesapeake Bay Retriever/German Shepherd mix named Abby. Only a few days earlier had this sweet girl made the same journey that the Australian Cattle Dog/Bluetick Coonhound was about to make. She, too, had left her family suddenly.

"Come aboard, Oliver Louis. You don't need no ticket." She said in a kind and gentle voice. "We're all here to greet you."

His tail gave a little wag. He placed his front right paw up on the first step and with a jump left the platform behind and entered the train car.

"Where are we going?" He asked.

"My sweet O-Man . . . to a Land of Hope and Dreams," Abby replied.

Without any hesitation Abby led Oliver Louis down a corridor towards a double door. As they got closer, he could hear the sound of voices. Behind the doors were other dogs.

He stopped.

Once again his ears perked up and he tilted his head. A few of the voices behind the doors sounded familiar.

"Come, O-Man," Abby urged him. Her dark, soulful eyes beckoned him onward.

The double doors opened and Oliver Louis could see those that had come to greet him. Friends that had made the journey before him gathered together.

He saw Quincy, the always-happy Golden Retriever, and the Gossip Hound, Daisy. With them were Pongo, Logan Benwizzen, puppy Carmella, Cozzie and Spikey, and Pointers Tinsleigh and Abby, and GSP, Kirby.

He looked across the room and saw Cleo, Autumn, Cheyanne and Dozer. Next to them were Cheyenne, Wyoming and Molly. Zeusie, Stryker, Cookie, Rosie and Strider looked on lovingly.

New friends had also come to welcome him. Beagles Rusty and Buddy Todd, Rinky, Sandra Marie, Raffles, Callie, Maleka, Daisy Ann and Georgie, Beezer and Jarvis. The Goobersmooches were there, Boudy, Bootsie, Gabby and Big Moe. Great Dane, Fred was there with Dobie's Roman and Sheb'z. Captain Ernie George joined them with first mate, Ben, and crew Jamaica, Tammy, Spike, Sheba and Miracle.

Oliver Louis continued to scan the room. He was looking for his family, his brothers. The crowd separated revealing a stage. In the centre of the stage stood his dear and beloved, Remy.

"Brother, " said Remy. "You were always the musical one. Singing, dancing, leading us all in song. This is for you, O-Man."

Remy began to sing:

OH . . . OH . . . OH . . . THIS TRAIN . . . I'M RIDING THIS TRAIN
DON'T YOU WANT TO RIDE?

Everyone joined in:

THIS TRAIN
THIS TRAIN
THIS TRAIN

The stage erupted to life as lights flashed and streaked across the platform. Joining Remy playing the guitar was Louie. Gypsy Belle was on the drums, Elvis on piano, and Mercury, Brutus, Mulligan and Momas were on horns.

Remy sang:

GRAB YOUR TICKET AND YOUR SUITCASE
THUNDERS ROLLING DOWN THIS TRACK
WELL YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE YOU'RE GOIN' NOW
BUT YOU KNOW YOU WON'T BE BACK
WELL DARLIN' IF YOU'RE WEARY
LAY YOUR HEAD UPON MY CHEST
WE'LL TAKE WHAT WE CAN CARRY
YA, AND WE'LL LEAVE THE REST
WELL, BIG WHEELS ROLL THROUGH FIELDS WHERE SUNLIGHT STREAMS
MEET ME IN A LAND OF HOPE AND DREAMS

Louie stood next to Remy and strummed the guitar; his rock 'n' roll/Motown roots shinning through with each cord he played.

Remy continued:

WELL I WILL PROVIDE FOR YOU
YA AND I'LL STAND BY YOUR SIDE

YOU'LL NEED A GOOD COMPANION NOW
FOR THIS PART OF YOUR RIDE

At that moment, Oliver Louis's brother, Trusty, placed his paw around O-Man's shoulder. Oliver Louis buried his face into the long golden hair of the Retriever and returned the loving embrace. Trusty took a muffin from his mouth and showed it to his brother. Oliver Louis wagged his tail and asked, "Where did you get that?"

"I snagged it from the Welcome To The Bridge sweets table . . . don't tell anyone," his legendary counter-surfing brother replied.

Remy sang:

YA LEAVE BEHIND YOUR SORROWS
YA THIS DAY BE LAST
WELL TOMORROW THERE'LL BE SUNSHINE
AND ALL THIS DARKNESS PAST
WELL, BIG WHEELS ROLL THROUGH FIELDS WHERE SUNLIGHT STREAMS
OH MEET ME IN A LAND OF HOPE AND DREAMS

One by one, each of his friends joined Trusty and Oliver Louis in the embrace.

Louie continued his solo.

Remy jumped off the stage and headed towards his brothers. He continued to sing:

WELL THIS TRAIN

CARRIES SAINTS AND SINNERS

THIS TRAIN

CARRIES LOSERS AND WINNERS

THIS TRAIN

CARRIES PUREBREDS AND MIXED BREEDS

THIS TRAIN

CARRIES LOST SOULS

I SAID THIS TRAIN

DREAMS WILL NOT BE THWARTED

THIS TRAIN

FAITH WILL BE REWARDED

THIS TRAIN

HEAR THE STEEL WHEELS SINGING

THIS TRAIN

BELLS OF FREEDOM RINGING

Remy approached his brothers and joined them in the embrace. The three were together again.

Mulligan played a saxophone solo.

Everyone sang:

WELL THIS TRAIN

CARRIES SAINTS AND SINNERS

THIS TRAIN

CARRIES LOSERS AND WINNERS

THIS TRAIN

CARRIES PUREBREDS AND MIXED BREEDS

THIS TRAIN

CARRIES LOST SOULS

I SAID THIS TRAIN

CARRIES BROKEN HEARTED

THIS TRAIN

THIEVES AND SWEET SOULS DEPARTED

THIS TRAIN

CARRIES FOOLS AND KINGS

THIS TRAIN

ALL ABOARD

I SAID THIS TRAIN

DREAMS WILL NOT BE THWARTED

THIS TRAIN

FAITH WILL BE REWARDED

THIS TRAIN

HEAR THE STEEL WHEELS SINGING

THIS TRAIN

BELLS OF FREEDOM RINGING

Mulligan played another saxophone solo; the sweet, soulful sound filled the room.

Remy ran his paw across Oliver Louis's speckled coat. He sang:

COME ON THIS TRAIN

PEOPLE GET READY . . . YOU DON'T NEED NO TICKET

ALL YOU'VE GOT TO DO IS GET . . . JUST GET ON BOARD

THIS TRAIN

PEOPLE GET READY

YOU DON'T NEED NO TICKET . . . YOU DON'T NEED NO TICKET

JUST THANK THE LORD . . . JUST THANK THE LORD

COME ON THIS TRAIN

Absolutely beautiful Miss Cookie! Momm a is having trouble typing this for me with her leaky eyes. I guess I better go lick those tears away. Sophie blows kisses and looks to the sky for all of the special shining stars in the night.......she slowly lifts her paw in salute to all of the angel furs.

Springsteen speaks for us all...as always. We mozied on over here after a quick FB update. Knew to clutch a kleenex from warnings on FB. God love you, Cookie...and Norm! You make hearts weary with the sadness of loss see a glimmer of hope again and know that "we will all be reunited in that land across the sky..." Love to you Cookie from Nelly and Carmella's momma!

Oh Norm, what can I say? You write so beautifully and I was too devastated to even try to bring music in to my last diary entry on OL's page where I made public his passing. The fact that you included all his pals who are at the bridge just touches my heart. You (and Riley) and Caroline - are one in a million I feel so honored to have you all in my life, especially at this difficult time. You made me cry, yes, but at the same time feel a little better - does that make any sense? I think you know what I mean. Love Marlene
