Likes: They were so happy to be rescued, to be cared for and fed.

Pet-Peeves: Many of them had resultant behavior issues, health issues, and extreme fears.

Favorite Toy: Toys and bowls and beds and cages and fencing, etc. were all generously donated.

Arrival Story: I was quite active with animal rescue in the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina - and although an estimated 15 to 20,000 animals were said to have been rescued by all the various rescue groups who converged into New Orleans and parts of Mississippi; that was a pitifully small percentage of the 200,000 estimated number of animals who were left behind (as was the practice then) when their humans evacuated.

Bio: The television footage that so moved us all - of the dogs on the rooftops and the cats in the trees, so desperate for someone to save them - will haunt me forever. Many of them drowned in the floodwaters, many starved to death, or died from resulting sickness and injuries. There are times when the memory of all those poor animals still brings me to tears.
I worked with Best Friends at their encampment in a field in Tylertown, MS; receiving the animals brought in daily from the streets of New Orleans. Best Friends stayed for SIX MONTHS after the hurricane and flood disaster, housing the animals and arranging for them to go to shelters all across the country to be either reunited with their owners or find new loving homes.
-> -> -> Later, there were memorials held in New Orleans for all the animals who perished after H. Katrina; that I could only participate in spirit. And there is a wonderful memorial headstone at the Best Friend's beautiful animal memorial cemetery in Kanab, Utah. And us rescuers who answered the call to help, from our homes all across the nation, will always memorialize them in our hearts.
