Mom put the baby chicks out this afternoon. They are really pretty big already and it's almost warm here so she figured it was time and she had the afternoon off to keep an eye on them.
After they were settled a bit, she even let all of us outside in our pen to see how we did. I must say, we were pretty good, except for Ali and Crystal...they kept chasing them along the fences. Of course, they couldn't GET them, but they sure tried! At least there was no barking!!!
Well, it started getting dark tonight so Mom went out to make sure they were going into the hen house for the night. Of course, NONE of them did, in fact most of the pullets were roosting up in the cedar and lilac trees or on the top rail of the fence. The rest of them, AND the Guineas, were mostly between the two fences, OR down in the lab pen.
Mom grabbed her scissors and started plucking them out of the trees and then clipping their wings so they can't fly anymore, then putting them into their house. Mother is not young anymore, and baby chicks are FAST!!! Fortunately, they are big enough now to get stuck when they try to climb thru the chain link fence!!!!
I was watching from the kitchen because, for some reason, Mom didn't want me to help her! Finally, I couldn't stand it any longer so I jumped on the door and it opened and I went out to help her.
Darn it all, she was on the LAST one!!!
But, since it was pretty dark and she may have lost count along the way, she decided I could go down in the lab pen with her and make sure there weren't any left down there. I sniffed and sniffed and sniffed, but I didn't find any left. Mom must not trust me, she opened the hen house and counted them all, BOL!!

Bet Mum ckeeps the wings clipped now !! We are learning so much from your diary - momma making note to herself to clip chicken wings before letting them roam.... I bet I'd be chasing 'em like Ali and Crystal. BOL! Me too-- chickens would be too tempting...
