Arrival Story: We adopted Andy when he was 10 months old, on August 30, 2003, from the Richmond SPCA. We had adopted Annie back in May but quickly realized that she seemed lonely. She often let out huge groans and long sighs. She was depressed... We had adopted her to give her a better home than what she had before but she didn't seem very happy so we took her to the SPCA with us so that we could hopefully find her a friend. We again had to walk through the horrid kennels where all the dogs are yelping and crying for attention.. But we happened to notice a small golden retriever puppy named Andy that was hiding quietly at the back of his kennel. We asked one of the adoption specialists about him and she said that he was really shy around men but that he absolutely loved other dogs. We introduced him to Annie in an empty hallway where they first got in a fight.. *lol* Then, they started playing really roughly.. like they were breaking each other in. *lol* The girl then told us that Andy had several problems.. He didn't like tall people.. especially men, loud noises, deep voices.. etc etc. He had been born a stray and found in a ditch when he was a few months old. He was turned into the SPCA and since then had been adopted out twice to two different couples and returned. I immediately fell in love with him because I knew that if he went home with me, I would never in a million years take him back there. He needed a home and I had one to offer. He wouldn't let James get too close to him at that time but I did manage to get him to sniff me a little bit. He looked petrified so I didn't push things because no one really knew how he'd been treated as a puppy and I didn't want to make his situation worse. We took him home with us that very day. He was really nervous.. running around hiding behind furniture and jumping up and running every time we moved... He wouldn't even close his eyes to sleep for the first five hours that he was home. Over the years he has learned that we mean him no harm and has developed into the spoiled rotten doggie that he should be. He's my best little buddy. He loves to snuggle and will jump into my lap at random moments.. he has no idea that he's too big to be a lap dog. He sleeps at my feet at night, loves his toys and his sisters. He's a very sweet boy and Annie hasn't had a moment of depression.. or peace.. since we got him. *lol*
