Arrival Story:
One morning my kids went out to their bus stop, they found this puppy in our front yard. They brought him to me, he was very malnutritioned. You could see every rib bone and his stomach was bloated like he was pregnant. He was soo full of worms. He was missing half the hair on his tail and had two bald spots on his body and what looked like spots of ringworm on his ears. His nails had never been clipped. He walked funny and didn't run or jump. I brought him in the house and gave him food and water. He is Brindle in color (black) , he was the most sweet and loveable guy. I felt soo sorry for him. I gave him a bath, trimmed his nails, and gave him some worm medicine that I had from the vet. By the time the kids came home from school I was in love. BUT I already had 4 other dogs. One outside and three in the house. I really didn't want another dog. We live in a very small town so there are no dog pounds or shelters in my area. Our local vet will take strays if he has the room but if they are not claimed or adopted in 72 hours, the are euthanized. We took him to the vet and they said that they would take him. When I found out that he only had 3 days for someone to adopt him, I knew no one ever would in the condition he was in. I was really torn in what to do. Well, I made them go and get him back out of the kennel and give him back to me. We saw the vet, and found the reason he walked funny and could not run or jump is because he was so malnutritioned that he had rickets. His bones were growing but lacking food, they were growing improperly and he was probably in a lot of pain. Watching him heal and grow has just been amazing to watch. We weren't sure exactly what breed he was at first. He had the body of a pit bull and the face of a lab so we just called him a mix. I will admit that I have never been a fan of pit bulls at all. In ohio, where I am originally from, the only time you heard of them is when someone was caught fighting them. When I moved to LA. I found that pit bulls are a very popular breed and they are everywhere. We called him our brindle labbull until this last weekend when we took him to Shreveport with us. He loves to go our in the car with us. We took him to Pet Smart with us and the trainer/groomer that was there asked us if he was a Staffie? I didn't know the name let alone the breed. She got a book on them and showed us. There was a carbon copy of my dog. They are shorter than a pit, broader in the chest, and have their own characteristics and traits. I came home and have done a lot of research on him. He fits everything to a tee. He is the most awesome, loveable, playful dog you could ever have. He weighed 18 lbs. when I found him, and he weighed 48 lbs. today when we took him to the vet to be neutered. Anyone that is afraid of pit bulls, need to give them a chance. Yes, I prefer to call mine a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. That way when someone asks me what he is, they aren't quite as afraid. I really don't care one way or the other what he is. He's my baby and I wouldn't trade him for anything.
