Arrival Story:
Eric and I were dog-less, living on the New River. We had talked endlessly about adopting a dog and continued to research different breeds. We couldn't agree on the type of dog until "Rough Collie" popped up on the Breed Selector Guide. Amazingly, we both liked collies. A perfect mix of energy, obedience and calmness. But who could afford a purebred dog? Months passed and one day, Eric unexpectedly drove 45-minutes to my workplace. I noticed a sable and white furry thing in his truck: a six-month old rough collie! A family in town couldn't keep Abby any longer and Eric adopted her. Abby was so scared at first. The first week of living with us, she was too obedient and too afraid of doing anything wrong. We had to "un-train" her a little. Soon, Abby warmed-up to us. She was dainty inside the house and an adventure-seeker outside. She went rafting with me on the river and hiking with us on the weekends. After 8-months of living with us, she attracted a homeless dog Red. So Red became a part of our family, too. Then, we realized we had to buy a house for them. So we bought a house and put in a large fenced-in yard so they can run every day. And on the weekends, we take her hiking. Best hiking companion!

Sighhhhhhhhh. Doggy Brothers

Mother purchased me a specialty frisbe designed not to hurt my gums when I jump to catch it. I love playing catch. However, my overly excitable dog gy brothers took my toy and proceeded to chew it. They would have chewed it up, but luckily Mother took it from them so I can practice with it tomorrow.

I love my new freezbe. It is from PetStages. All fashionable girl collies know PetStage Toys are "in" right now.

Orudis' Gentle Death

Today, my kitty Orudis passed away. Mom adopted her 9 years ago from the SPCA in Fredericksburg. She was at least a year old back then. She was so social and loved to ride on Mom's shoulders.

For the past three days, Orudis was only drinking water, not eating and very weak. But I didn't think she would pass away today. Mom and Dad took her to the vet and they discovered she had extreme kidney failure. She must have had kidney failure for years, but now her kidneys had gotten too bad.

Mom said Orudis purred in her lap as she cuddled with her for the last time. She was too weak to do much more. They petted her as the vet injected her with the chemicals that put-her-to-sleep. She had a gentle death.

Now Orudis is in the flowerbed waiting for flowers to bloom in the spring in her honor. Mom is very sad. I keep checking on her. She keeps having doubts about putting Orudis to sleep. Did she do it too soon? I tell her no. The vet said the tests showed she was very ill and in pain. In the next couple of days, she would be so much worse.

As the alpha dog, I'm keeping an eye on Mom. I know she'll be better tomorrow. She just needs some time to grieve.

Dogs under the covers?

Last night, Mom put a blanket on me. I was pleasantly asleep on the floor so I didn't bother to remove it. In a way, I almost liked the added warmth. But after awhile, I got up... I didn't want Brody to think I've soften. Real dogs don't need blankets.

Brody (he's such a Momma's Boy) always sleeps under the covers in Mom's bed during the winter months. He hasn't learned to be a real dog yet and toughen up like me.

I'm a real dog. I'm tough and I don't need to be babied like Brody. I'm too dignified. Because I'm a REAL dog, I sleep on the Oriental rug or the couch.
