Leave a bone for Zak, always in my heart

Nicknames:
Pickles

Quick Bio:
-purebred-dog rescue

Likes:
Getting and giving affection (especially kissing--he would stick his tongue in your mouth any chance he got) and ladies' underwear.

Pet-Peeves:
Getting a bath and getting his feet wet.

Favorite Toy:
Anything he could chew on including sticks, tennis balls, and bones.

Favorite Food:
Zak was a thief and loved to steal things out of the garbage, off the counter, or from the barbeque.

Favorite Walk:
The salt flats.

Best Tricks:
Getting hurt and not letting anyone know. He refused to let a broken toe stop him from his daily game of fetch. He was faster on three legs than his brother Miles was on four.

Arrival Story:
I wanted a male dog as a friend for my girl Bean. I saw his picture in the paper and went to meet him at his foster mom's studio. I think it was love at first sight. He and Bean didn't get along so well in the beginning, both thinking that they were in charge, but after a few months they were the best of friends. Many thanks to his foster mom for saving him from those rotten kids who were going to have him PTS because they thought he was stupid (he definitely was NOT!) and for deciding that I was the right human for him.

Bio:
Zak was a wonderful dog who loved people. He would sit patiently while children hugged and patted him and then he'd give them big kisses. He really enjoyed playing fetch and was the fastest dog I've ever seen. He was diagnosed with cancer in August of 2003 and true to his tough, stubborn Pit Bull nature, lived well for almost another year. Even the vet (who he loved--he gave her kisses every time he saw her) said she hadn't expected him to be around for as long as he was. He died on June 23rd, 2004 after a trip to the beach where he got to see all of his friends.

Almost a year after Zak died, I received a license renewal notice for him from Oakland Animal Control Services. One of the choices on the renewal form is "The dog is deceased or no longer owned by me." I checked that box, circled deceased, and drew a frowny face next to it, as I had been thinking a lot about Zak recently and was really missing him. About a week later I opened my mail to find a very sweet letter of condolence from the licensing manager at Oakland Animal Services. That a public servant working at an overwhelmed city agency took the time to send me a personal note touched me deeply. It is one of the nicest things anyone has done, not mention above and beyond the call of duty, so along with Miles & Jena (and Zak & Bean from beyond the Bridge), I send out big wags to Oakland Animal Contol!
