Arrival Story:
Mia, first Mother of Pearl, brought Pearl to Jon's gallery where he was director, Southern Exposure. Jon fell in love and then so did Debra, his partner. They asked for walks, sleepovers and then we took care of Pearl when Mia went off to grad school. When Mia returned, complete joint custody was established. Pearl had a Huge Personality and she more than took a Village....and continues to have a huge retinue of fans, is the subject of many legends. Miss Pearl left us October 14, 2004 in a peaceful ceremony in the garden. Her life was lived to the fullest, her suffering of the last day is over, and we live on, missing her terribly, but determined to live as she did ----where each moment counts--- in her honor. No dog has been more loved.

Miss Pearl had a raccoon tail and a black patch over one eye. She was a sweet small girl who was very waggy and great at saying hello. Pearl was a bundle of energy and vitality most of her life, was a spectacular athlete and lived with gusto. She enjoyed her senior years, sleeping in the sun, playing ball between her paws rather than in mid-air, barking supervision and refereeing games of the other dogs at the ball park, and enjoyed popping any balloon lying on the ground. She was the most loving, sweet thing in private, the most noisy (voice like Ethel Merman), attention-getting and energetic in public, constantly inviting any unsuspecting soul to throw the ball for her or share whatever they were eating. She defined full centrifugal force: wherever she was the world revolved around her, and the energy of her remarkable soul fills our hearts and always will.

In Our Hearts Forever

After a month of recovery, and many days of the small events that gave her joy, Miss Pearl departed on October 14th. Jon, Mia and Debra gathered in the afternoon and offered up any tasty bit she might want, along with all their love, but it was time to let her go. We tried, each in our own way, to give her the best of life, comfort and love, and she always welcomed living with an inspired energy. We welcome any memories and stories of Pearl that you would want to send us. She lives in our hearts, always and forever, and how lucky and honored we have been to find her, to fall in love with her, to be her companions for so many years.

Together at Last

Jon came home today from his long summer at the political conventions and installing his show in Houston. We are rejoicing at all being together again, sharing the big bed like a ship sailing off into the cool night smells. Feeling very lucky Miss P has held on this long with enough signs of joy at being here. But we know her health is precarious, her pain from arthritis so hard on her, and she is a stoic little girl. So, we count the minutes as precious and try to do whatever (massage and medications) that can ease the aches, and take delight in what delights her along the way.

Hello (says Miss P), I went on two adventures today, out in the car and to the Pt Isabel pub (my favorite spot). We just went to the Pub and I got a nutritious treat and enjoyed letting the wind ruffle my hair on the freeweay. Oh, and Ialso acted like an angel when workmen came to install the new dishwasher, which could be why I got the special outing. I'm walking better and acting much more like my 'old self' before I got sick. Life is good --- criterosity toward dawn in the backyard when I had my breakfast and went out for a quick sniff. I hoovered the grass in a zig zag pattern for vital statistics on what kind of beast.

I'm hoping for more tonite, then I go to Mia's for the weekend of R & R. I'm glad to be here on the planet,

Mz D is quick to point out that the sniff fest is always moderated by herself so that a) Pearl doesn't injure herself with frenetic rushing about and b) the critter that surfaces is in fact A Skunk, of which there is ample evidence one inhabits the neighborhood).

Mz D would like to add that, if you don't know Pearl's past achievements, her film credits include starring as Cybergod (if god were a dog on your computer screen who gave good advice on how to live well) in Lynn Hershman's film Conceiving Ada, also starring Tilda Swinton (1997). You can learn more about the film at Hershmanlandia: http://www.henryart.org/hlandia/hershmanlandia.html

And in 2004 Miss Pearl was featured on a series of bus kiosks on Market Street in San Francisco, part of Jon Winet/Margaret Crane project The Street. You can see her billboard, which advertised the non-profit Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS), at: http://www.the-street.net/

Signing off, her PR rep, xxx D
