She came across a cocker spaniel rescue out west of Chicago and got information on a golden cocker spaniel that seemed nice, so she and I went to see him. The golden dog would have nothing to do with us so we were looking at some of the other cockers that the woman had rescued and Gizmo was in the group. I was sitting on the edge of the porch and he came straight up to me looking for some love and scratches. I still like to believe he picked me out. We took him home that afternoon. Bio: Gizmo was the sweetest rescue dog I've ever known, and definitely ties with sweetest pet ever as well. (I've never known that kind of unconditional love before or since until I got my own puppy, Blackberry.) We adopted just before my senior year of high school and when I went away to college he started to act oddly but we all thought it was just because of the changes in homelife. He started to have some inner-ear problems and had to have a painful surgery on his ear that year. By the next summer things were definitely not right with Gizmo. He started getting sick and wouldn't eat or drink. I'm still not quite sure what caused it or if they ever even figured it quite out, but the way it was explained to me he was having a massive allergic reaction to his own body and he started to have massive liver failure. When I last saw Gizmo it was a Tuesday and he started to seem better, healthier, and happier. The next I heard was on Friday. My mom had given me a phone call basically telling me that his condition had gotten incredibly worse over the last couple of days and he had internal bleeding. The vet said he would go within the next day anyway and that we could end his suffering early. I didn't get the message until a few hours later because I was at school. She had asked if I wanted to come home from school (it would only have taken an hour) and someone could pick me up so I could say goodbye before he was gone. I didn't get the message until after he was gone. He wasn't yet five years old. 12/8/97 - 11/8/02 I've Been On Dogster Since:
