Arrival Story:
We went to a breeder with the intention of securing a golden retriever puppy but were captivated by a beautiful black lab, and after spending some time with the dog, decided he would be perfect as a companion. He is perfect as a companion, unfortunately we didn't know he had spent 9 months in a kennel without being properly socialized. We quickly discovered that any introduction to a stranger would result in a barrage of furious barking (no biting, fortunately). It has taken 5 years, but we have been slowly introducing him to new people and situations and were pleased when he recently passed his Novice 2 obedience class - a feat we couldn't even imagine when we first realized just how twitchy he is around strangers. Despite all that, he's a fantastic dog and a great friend.

Fun with Socialization

I never thought we would get this far. After 2 1/2 years of hard work and socialization at the Tulsa Dog Training Center, Dante and I had our first obedience trial. For the two hours we were there he was friendly, sociable and didn't bark at anyone. When we got home I hugged him and he smelled like perfume because so many ladies had been petting him. We didn't qualify in the obedience trial, but that's OK. That was never the real goal - only that he learn to not be fearful.

He's still twitchy, but nothing like he was before, and he and I have agreed to keep trying for his CD title.
