This evening at the kids' elementary school we celebrated the Feast of Saint Martin, or "Laternennacht" as they say in German. We all gathered in the school gym in the dark with Laternen (lanterns) and sang fall songs in German, like Der Herbst ist da (Fall is here) and Ich gehe mit meine Laterne (I'm going with my lantern) and Laterne, Laterne, Sonne, Mond und Sterne (Lantern, lantern, sun, moon and stars). Then we filed out of the gym to walk around the park behind the school in a grand procession with all the lanterns lighting the way. It was so much fun, all those big furlesses and all the children swinging those lanterns back and forth. I wanted to jump up on all of them and snap at the flickering lights!
Then the best part was coming all the way back around to the front of the school and eating apples and cookies that the parents had baked. Of course I wasn't allowed anything from the tables, but kids do drop stuff. Always tasty things lying about in the dark grass that Mom knows nothing of . . . hehehe.
