I went to the holistic vet yesterday and got some powders and liquids and vitamins and herbs to take with my food and we started it yesterday. AND the vet also recommended we get some Wellness Core dog food which as mom says is 'stupidly expensive'. OMD! We picked up a small bag at a feed store close to the vet, but when we got home, she went online and found it can be bought at PetSmart just down the road from us. We have an extra bag of Purina One that mom bought when it was on sale last month, that we're going to exchange for the Wellness food. She said Austin can eat it too. The vet also gave mom a recipe to make some of her own food for us with veggies and ground beef or chicken or turkey. So when she can get to the store she'll pick up some ground meat and veggies and make us some of that too. (well, it might only be for me, cause we ALL know Austin HATES human food. We'll just have to see.)
I'm supposed to go on Tuesday for my chemo pills but the holistic vet told mom that chemo swells the tumors and since there's not a whole lot of extra room in my brain for any extra swelling to be done, mom's wondering if we really need to have it done? According to my regular vet, the chemo isn't going to be given to me in many treatments like 10 or 12 like our pals have had, but only once or twice. She didn't understand only once or twice. How will they know if it worked and if it got rid of or shrunk the tumor? Mom's thinking she needs to talk to the oncology doctor to have things explained to her, but we're pretty optimistic the holistic meds are going to work. But she also said she's not going to do another $2200 MRI to see if it shrunk or went away, so they'll just have to tell by the blood work numbers.
We made a follow-up appointment on the 20th with the holistic vet and she'll know by then if we can start weaning me off all the other medications (prednisone, tramadol, gabapentin) since the holistic meds will have gotten into my system real good by then. Until then, I'm taking all my new meds/treatments along with the regular meds I've been on.
So, that's all we know for now. Mom's still saying I look really good for a dog that's supposed to be "so sick" with a brain tumor. (She's going to get a new camera so she can take some pictures of me and post to my page and then ya'll can see for yourself how great I look.) BOL ;)
We'll let ya know what all was said and done at the specialty vet on Tuesday.
Continue to keep them fingers and pawses crossed. :)
P.S. We mailed out our Christmas cards today, so ya'll should be getting them sometime this week.
Hope everything goes well with the Wellness. I've been on it and LOVE it! Looking forward to your pictures.
You will be in our thoughts and prayers
Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers, Doo...
Sounds like aplan.
Honestly chemo doesnt work well for many...maybe as you say need to speak to the oncologist again
Wellness... it isnt expensive when you consider that you feed dramatically LESS.
My Boys weight 68 and 58 lbs each. They are on TOTW ... Flicka gets 3/4 of a cup a day.. and Lucas 2/3 of a cup. Your will feed similarly with Wellness.
Purina has so many fillers... Wellness doesnt.
A 15 lb bag of TOTW lasts my 2 for about 5 weeks... and at less than $27 ... I dont call that expensive. They DO get a tablespoon of tinned TOTW mashed in a little warm water as well. I never ever feed dry... kibble need to be wetted for the sake of the dogs kidneys. They also get a big tablespoon of natural live yoghurt on their food....
Did you ask about the Milk Thistle ? That will support Doo'd kidneys... again.. the Boys and I get that daily !
Sending you lotsa POTP. My momma are still working on my cards.
Sending lots of good thoughts and pawyers for you to keep feeling good, Doo!
When growlmy was on her own 18 months of chemo, she took bucketfuls of herbs and vitamins...no side effects that were too unbearable was the result, and evfurryone always remarked how well she was looking, well, except fur her hairs of course. The best ones that helped were from the TCM line, aka: Traditional Chinese Medicine...in facy her bloodwork nevfur bottomed out like for some peeps. Milk Thistle is a great thing, too.
She still keeps on some of them for good measure.
Oncologist knew about some of the things she was taking, but not the whole lot, BOL!
MJF, that's what they gave me was Traditional Chinese Medicines. One is called "Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian Ma Tang" and its a powder that mom puts in with my food.
My grandma was in end stage kidney failure and end stage liver failure and we got her some Milk Thistle and it extended her life by 2 years. So its some super good stuff.
Flicka, when you put it like that, eating less and it lasting longer, then it doesn't seem as bad. Its just when mom bought it for the first time it was kind of a shock to her system. BOL
Anya, thanks for the reminder about Wag.com.
Whit & Fin, thanks for the prayers and the POTP. I appreciate all the prayers and POTP everyone sends me. It works wonders.
Doo, we are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers and hoping that tumor shrinks. Sounds like you are doing quite well. Stay strong!
Keeping you in my prayers Doo. Please keep us posted as mom is curious as to what the oncologist will say. Good info from Flicka and MJF's mom!
