Quick Bio:

Likes:
She loved to get belly rubs, go on walks, and go on car rides. Everytime we got out the leash and harness she went nuts. That was about the only time she got excited. :)

Pet-Peeves:
Isabelle didn't like it when I would fry food, so it always made me wonder about her past. She hid in the back bedroom anytime I cooked with oil.

Favorite Toy:
Izzy liked to chew bully sticks and pig ears sometimes. She wasn't a big fan of rawhides like our other dogs. She just preferred to be pet and chill.

Favorite Food:
Our dogs were all vegetarians for years. Izzy had terrible allergies, so I finally decided to make a switch to high-quality kibble with meat. We did that for a few months, then made the switch to Raw. I was so glad Isabelle got to enjoy the raw diet.

Favorite Walk:
Isabelle loved to go anywhere with us. She was always up for a car ride and a walk.

Best Tricks:
Isabelle didn't really learn any "tricks." She could sit and stay, but she just wasn't a trick-learning kind of dog.

Arrival Story:
We saved Izzy from the Humane Society in Gainesville, GA. We were there only to pick up tee shirts for a pet sitting organization, but while visiting, we decided to walk some dogs so they could stretch their legs. I had a very special feeling about Isabelle (having had a dream of her before I ever saw her), so we brought our Cooper to visit the next day, and he gave Izzy the seal of approval. Isabelle looked as if she had been used for breeding, but we have no idea how she actually ended up at the Humane Society. We could see every bone in her body; she was so skinny. Yet, she was sweet and gentle... And very beautiful.

Bio:
Isabelle was a nearly perfect dog. We had no clue about her background, but we didn't have to house train her at all! She was excellent inside and great with our other dogs. She was the most laid-back dog we ever knew-- very sweet and sensitive. Tears are just welling up in my eyes as I type this because she was just such a good girl. She always showed great concern if any of our other pets were getting in trouble. We called her "momma dog" because she wanted to take care of everyone.

Isabelle's Memory:
Isabelle started to decline in health on Sunday, April 27th. At first we thought she had a pulled muscle, but then by Tuesday night she couldn't stand. Her legs would just give out from under her, and she wasn't showing interest in eating. We took her to our vet, but she had to refer us to the University of Georgia. UGA did all they could do, but discovered that Izzy had a type of cancer that is not treatable. The tumor was on her spine, and the reason she declined so rapidly was that it had broken through her spinal cord. On Friday, May 2, 2008, Mick and I drove immediately to Athens after work and had our beloved Isabelle put to sleep. We held her in our laps and talked to her for a while before the vet gave her the injection. She went very peacefully. I don't think I have ever cried that hard in my life. It was probably the hardest thing I have ever done. We had her cremated, and keep her inside with us, where she belongs. Isabelle was such a wonderful dog. She was only in our lives a few years, but she really blessed us, and I can only pray that she knew how much we loved her and that she wasn't in pain for very long.

Newspaper Story:
The Friday after Izzy died, I was tidying the kitchen a bit. I found an old newspaper that I hadn't looked at. Before I put it in the recycle bin, I opened it up. I immediately saw a story written by Ricky Shaw about his dog's passing. It brought back all the feelings we had when we put Izzy to sleep. I closed the paper after reading the story and saw the date on the front--May 2. The day we put Izzy to rest. I felt that it was a sign--the author had discussed "doggie afterlife," and I felt that Izzy wanted me to see it.

I am not there...:
I AM NOT THERE Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn's rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there, I did not die.

FOHCAS (our local humane society) has started a memorial fund in Izzy's name. We're not sure of any details yet, but Mick and I are very touched to have this lasting memory that will help others. We'll post more details when we have them.

Izzy sent me a Sign

It seems that every time Izzy sends us a sign, it's on a Friday. She passed away on a Friday, so I guess it's appropriate. Yesterday (6/27) I had been thinking about Izzy a lot. I actually went to the local gem/rock shop to buy a special crystal for Isabelle. The shop owner suggested Citrine because it will help connect our world to the spiritual world. I took the crystal all the way to Unicoi to cleanse it in the creek that Izzy loved. On my way home, I saw a huge rainbow and it appeared to be ending right at our house! I knew it was Isabelle. Once again, for the millionth time, I cried my eyes out, but I also felt comfort. It was the rainbow bridge!

A Touching Gift

Today (6/20) we received a small package in the mail. Inside was a plaster cast of Izzy's paw print from UGA Vet School. I just rubbed and rubbed it while I cried. I had no idea they had done that. It is a piece of her that we didn't have. It's such a special gift.
