Mum got stressed :(

*Sigh*

The Weather was perfect, the car was packed, we was off to the beach :)

Me & Ty love the beach but the beach we was going to today we had never been to and mum didn't know how busy/dog friendly it would be. After a 2 hour journey we arrived hot and restless and after a quick drink we set off up the trail to the beach. LOADS of dogs passed us by on the trail, mum got me my treats and got me to watch, i actually ignored a few on my own accord and got heaps of praise.

Once we got on the beach, mum realised there was alot of dogs running around all off lead and all pretty well behaved. So she got upset realising i wouldn't be able to come off lead and Ty wouldn't much either as he tends to run up to other dogs. This got her quite stressed, it was HOT, we were cooped up on leads and for most of the day sat bored stiff in the tent :( Ty did come off for a bit, he wasn't to bad. He did run up to a couple of dogs but recalled easily. Mum attached me to my new 10 meter long line for extra space and she just stood by a beach hut with us both on leads! Everytime we turned around there was a new dog appearing and i was reacting :( This in turn got mum even more stressed, we went to the beach to relax and mum said it was the worst beach trip ever! :0

We retreated to the tent for shade, Ty fell asleep, i was fidgety and looking at everything going on. Just as i laid down and started to relax, 2 Black Labs came right up to the entrance of our tent and as i was on a 10 meter line i shot out there and started to "attack", as usual lots of noise, the other dog was reacting and mum and Nannie finally managed to drag me back into the tent! The 2 owners of the Labs didn't even say sorry when they were in the wrong! Out of all the miles of beach they had to walk they had to walk right by the entrance of our tent! Mum said she sometimes seriously wonders what's wrong with people at times BOL. They carried on walking down the beach but did then put their dogs on a lead. Mum isn't best pleased with me tonight as we were doing so well at training and this is the part that Anita & Alan aren't seeing! Nannie reckons it's just in me and that no amount of training will help me :( However she also said that she didn't think i was that bad...it was other people that were in the wrong!

What do you do when you see a dog in the distance you don't know on lead? Do you pop your dog back on lead out of respect for the other owner and not knowing what the other dogs problems may be if any? Do you gain some sort of control of your dog? Or do you just continue to walk on by with your dog in a leashed dogs face? :( On the way back lots of dogs passed by, a Lurcher who sped by, i lunged and growled at him. A Boxer laying down, i barked at him, and then a little white fluffy dog was off lead and came towards me, i barked/growled/lunged and made Ty let a bark out in frustration. Mum had had enough at this stage and although it might sound slightly cruel she thought if the white dog ended up getting bitten it would be the owners fault for allowing it to approach me! We got in the car and left after about 4 hours on the beach :(

On a brighter note, mum got some nice piccies and my Agility training went well last night. Just a shame our beach trip wasn't as nice as expected :(

Missy x

Hot tired stressed and stressing... basically the outcome was inevitable.

Folk dont always take care.. and that is a fact you have to contend with in all life.

Bottom line.. go to the beach on a different day. Account for others.,.. and dont think there is such a thing as ''cant change''. You get discouraged each time and then you see it CAN change. Has take me 3 yrs by myself.. with Flicka.. and we arent done yet... but i know we are winning.

Just my 2 pennith worth

Flicka/Pam,

Thanks for your comment. Mum reckons she maybe expected to much from me, like you said it was Hot, we were cooped up, i was stressed and wanted to run free. I have jealousy issues with other dogs off lead as it is so mum is putting it down to stress and hot weather.

I know you can't control others actions but it just gets so annoying after what seems the 100th dog has just approached us!

We went today thinking it was a week day, people would be working and the beach would be more private. We was wrong BOL!

Guess everyone had the same idea :/

Sorry that mum was so stressed at what was supposed to be a relaxing experiencing, Missy. Perhaps you were picking up her stress and reacting to that more than you were reacting to the pups passing by?

Don't know if you have access to Cesar Millan and the Dog Whisperer episodes in the UK. We watch him and it is usually the handler that needs retrained, not the pup. Not to offend your mum any, Missy, but do you think this could be part of your problem? You can sense her stress?

Crossing my paws for you that training keeps progressing--no matter how slowly, sweetie.

I feel your pain, really! I have not been doing too well with other dogs either...must be the terrier in us! BOL

In some respects, when other dogs are off lead and you are cooped up, it makes the situation worse.

I am so sorry Missy that it wasn't a peaceful day at the beach. Keep trying! We will both get it right eventually.

Kisses to you and your Mum,
Cali

Hi Missy I'm sorry you had such a stressful day at the beach . That's no fun for either of you or your mom .
My mom has the same problem with my furbrother Henry . She has learned to take him alone and thngs seem a little better when working with just him . With two dogs then your always worried about what the other pup is doing . Plus the fact if one pup is stressed or excited the other pup will pick up on that and react .
Missy hope your next visit to the beach will be more fun .

Don't feel too down-heatred, Missy's mum.

Everyone has bad days & it has been very hot.

Some dog owners do not seem to understand that some other dogs have issues. I've seen lots. Big dogs will come running up Jet. I'll go to get her & the owners will say, "he's alright. He just wants to play." Jet has fear issues with big dogs so I have to explain that she's nervious & ask them to get their dog.

But take it slowly & I'm sure she will improve with time.

By the way, Flicka, it still is school term here. 2 weeks left. =)

Thanks everyone, i feel much better today about the whole situation.

Checkers, that's a good point and one i'm well aware of. I've been advised to let her have more of a slack lead and was advised that a training line would be great to work with ( hence the 10 meter long line ) however look at yesterday for an example, she shot out the tent and went for the Lab. This was on a very loose lead, i was sitting on some of it so she couldn't completly run off but the lead was loose there was no tension, she still shot out there like a Bat out of hell! I always try to remain calm and confident with her, my commands are clear and precise but when she starts acting up i do get stressed out :(

Miss Molly, i have been walking both dogs seperate at different times. Yesterday was difficult as it was a family outing so Ty obviously had to be with us too. Unfortunatly none of my family would walk Ty for me so i had to concentrate on both dogs.

Cali, i do think it has alot to do with the Terrier nature. That's why my mum said about her "having it in her" as much as i hate to label certain breeds, some are more predisposed to having certain traits and Terriers in general are feisty, and hard work. All her trainers have said the same thing about Terriers. I hope you continue to improve with other dogs, it's no fun is it?

Jet, thanks. The weather couldn't have helped as she was hot and bored too. At training she's constantly doing something where as yesterday we was just lounging around giving Missy every oppertunity to react. The next beach we go to is one we go to every year and one i'm familiar with so i know which areas to go to etc which are more private.

Hi, Missy!

All and all, we think you did really well, and we were so happy to hear Tyler was essentially undaunted :)

Missy was being protective of her environ. Other dogs wandering up to her space was inappropriate. It's disheartening when those responsible pet guardians (like your Mom), take careful, prohibitive steps to avoid confrontations and others are less conscientious.

Keep up the good work, pups - and try not to give your awesome Mom a nervous breakdown :)

Hugs from your pals.

P.S. We hope to see some of these pics in a scrap layout :)

Hi Harv, Hi Tucker :)

Harv, we went to Wells next the sea ;) I would rather have Missy like Harvey though BOL. At least she doesn't mean anything aggressive that way!

Tucker, thanks for the encouragement. We've been told it's perfectly normal for Missy to react the way she does to dogs approaching her "space" but to be honest it's not really is it? I mean all dogs would be acting the same way if it was normal. Miss didn't just react to the Labs, she was barking and growling at dogs she could see running around quite a way away.

But, i will continue doing what i'm doing and hope this isn't a big set back in her training.

Firstly Missy, tell your mum to try and not make such a big deal out of your bad behaviour! Most doggie minded peeps, once they see a dog on a lead, this tells them to be aware. If the doggies go to approach you, immediately warn their owners that you have some issues and to keep their dogs away. Most will call their dogs back and if they don't - it's their problem not yours;) Try not to be too stressed over this as this will be passing down to Missy herself who is already "wound up" and it's not doing either of you any good sweetie. You are doing great in your agility and training - keep up the good work:D
