Maddies New Life

I Loved You Best

So this is where we part, My Friend,
And you’ll run on, around the bend,
Gone from sight, but not from mind,
New pleasures there you’ll surely find.

I will go on; I’ll find the strength,
Life measures quality, not its length,
One long embrace, before you leave,
Share one last look, before I grieve.

There may be others, that much is true,
But they be they, and they aren’t you,
And I, fair, impartial, or so I thought,
Will remember well, all you’ve taught.

Your place I’ll hold, you will be missed,
The fur I stroked, the nose I kissed,
And as you journey, to your final rest,
Take this with you, Maddie…
I loved you best.

Maddie Gone But Never Forgotten

12/1/2008 - It is with a heavy heart that I have to write about our Maddie Girls death. It was quick and unexpected. She had a normal day, went on her walkie and enjoyed the sights and smells. She came back and rested as usual, had dinner as usual, had her little bit of lettuce while I made salad for dinner for us as usual. When we set down to eat neither she nor Misty came to "watch" like they usually do, this was the first sign that something was not usual. I checked them and Maddie was in her little bed and she didn't seem as if anything was wrong so I went back to eat. I went back and forth several times during dinner because it seemed odd that they didn't come even when invited. Louie came along with me the last time I checked and Maddie stood up and threw up, I thought, Oh, that's what is wrong, she has an upset stomach. She went in the hall and laid down and I cleaned it up. I cleaned up after dinner and she was still laying on the floor in the hall looking at me. I still had the feeling that something was not right even though she seemed OK. It was close to the time for our vet to close so I quickly called and asked to bring her in. I felt a little silly, after all dogs throw up all the time and nothing is really wrong with them, but Maddie had never, ever thrown up. She let me carry her to the car, she hates to be picked up and she let me hold her in the car, she hates to be held, I was getting more concerned. When we got there they took us almost immediately, they took her temp and it was OK, they tried to get her blood pressure and couldn't in her back leg so tried in her front leg and couldn't, I should have known then but she "looked" OK, just sort of quiet. They took her back to do x-rays to rule out a twisted stomach and see what her bladder stones were doing and to put in an IV. They said both were OK and they didn't see anything really wrong except that she had fluid around her heart and they wanted us to transport her to the emergency clinic to be watched for the night and we were to bring her back in the morning. They went to get her paperwork ready and to call and make arrangements for us to take her. They came back and told that, she was scaring them and that they had almost "lost" her three times back there and they were afraid that we wouldn't be able to get her there alive. They took us back to see her and she clearly wasn't there any longer, so we chose to let her go while we held her and buried our faces in her fur, giving her kisses and telling her how much we loved her. She was the most special dog, there will be and are others but I don't think there will ever be another that I will love so much. She is still Mama's best girl.

I am still a good girl. I have a busy year. I take lots of walkies and I go campin. Sometimes I hurt when I walk but Mama gives me special medicine. I have a big operation, I have bladder stones I have to eat special food. I have many hurt ears and I gets medicine for dat too. It is a good thing I love my medicine, I even like it when Mama squishes my ear medicine in my ears. I have to go back to the Dr again to see if my peepee is better and my ears too. I lose a little weight, I eats lots of greenie beanies and carrots and puffy rice cereal with my food. I am gettin a waist and Mama can almost feel my ribs! I am still Mamas best girl!

Good Day, Bad Day

I had a good day and a bad day yesterday. First the good day, it was a really hot day and Mama took Misty and Me to the park on our walk, we went down to the creek and Misty jumped right in the water and got really, really wet. I was convinced to walk in the water for a few steps, I don’t like for my feet to get wet and dirty. I liked walking on the rocks though. On the way back home I was feeling so good that I was running faster than Mom, I love that pain medicine! It was a lot of fun. Then when we came home we went out in the back yard to play. Now for the bad day part, I was laying on the deck and saw something moving by the big tree. I forgot about my arthritis and took a flying leap off the deck and ran to the tree where I started screaming. No one knew what happened just that I hurt my leg somewhere and was limping badly. When I quit screaming Mama was quite upset and I had to kiss her face lots to let her know I was going to be OK. She gave me some more of my pain medicine and now I feel a little better. My leg isn’t swollen and everything feels straight inside so we are going to watch it for a few days to see if it gets better on its own. Now if everyone would just sit down and stay instead of walking around so much I could rest too and not have worry about them!

We went on vacation, camping in a little house on wheels. We had to ride a very long time in the truck but I didn’t throw up, only a little when I had a treat. Mom said no more treats while we ride… The medicine is like a miracle, I can run and play like I used to, I can even run faster than Mom! Then we ran out of it and Mom had to call the Dr and get me some more. Vacation was fun, I got to climb mountains and I like coming down better, I saw a waterfall and walked behind it, I even got to walk in the creeks, I didn’t like that much but I did so Misty wouldn’t call me a sissy. Mom took my pillow with us so I could rest outside on it and be more comfortable than on the ground, I liked it except when Misty called me a sis. I paid her back and hid the treats that I didn’t want from her; she usually watched and got them in the end. There were a lot of other people and dogs in the campground and I got to bark a lot to protect my family and when we hiked I had to be last so we didn’t loose anyone. It was a great adventure and I hope we get to do it again soon.

First Days

When I got to my new house there were CATS, I thought yea! Mom said we don’t chase cats and spoiled all my fun. When we went out for a walk I walked v e r y s l o w Mom was concerned, she said I walked slower than her Mom who uses a walker. We went to the Dr to get checked out before we went someplace called vacation. The Dr said that I have arthritis in my hip and that it hurts when I walk so that is why I am so slow, she gave me some medicine to try to see if it helps.

I’ve got so much to tell….. First I went to a place with a lot of dogs then someone came and took me to another place with lots of dogs that look just like me! It was fun but really noisy! They put my picture on the internet and I was like a star, they said someone would fall in love with me and take me home, I couldn’t wait! Not long after they said someone was coming to look at me and maybe take me home. The big day came and the people came with a big dog and we played a little, she seemed to like me so we got in the car and we went to my new home. I was so excited that I threw up on the way!
