Arrival Story: Doesn't matter who you talk to, whether they're a dog lover or not everyone has a stray dog story. I am no different. I lost my beloved Lab/Pit mix Buddy to old age in July 2005. Buddy was a deep thinker and would look at you with the most soulful eyes. Not one of those licky, jump all over you dogs, he was more the loyal type that would lay beside your feet and loved to go for rides. I miss that boy.
My nutsy friend Renee called me one day back in 1993, "boy oh boy have I found the dog for you, she exclaimed"! Great, I thought just what I need a dog to fit inside my miniscule one bedroom apartment, in a building that doesn't allow dogs. Not to mention my cat who had a zero dog-tolerance policy.
Anyway, being the softy I am I find myself at the shelter where Renee had placed the pooch she found while walking out of a Teriyaki Restaurant in Winnetka of all places, how ironic. I looked at him, he looked at me and then walked to the back of the cage and laid down. Incarcerated and already depressed after just a few hours of life behind bars.
Weeks went by and when nobody came to get the pooch there I was with Renee on Euthanasia day rescuing a dog I definately did not want or need. We quickly became friends however, and I eventually found a small house with a backyard that worked well for both of us. We were happy and my cat, Lucy grew to love Buddy too. When a friend suggested a group camping trip to Big Sur, I sprung at the idea and bought a condo-sized tent to accommodate both Buddy and I.
Everyone was heading down to the beach and while unsure whether Buddy would bolt off without his leash on, I took the chance once we walked down the cliff to the isolated stretch of sand. Talk about pure joy. Once off the leash, that dog ran so fast, chasing the gulls and jumping in the waves. This went on for hours, he eventually came back to me, completely happy, all tired out and after a big drink of water we headed back to camp.
There were many, many trips over the years to other California beaches, the Sierra's, Lone Pine, and other destinations. This dog had the life every dog should have. But when it came time to spread his ashes after his passing, back to Big Sur I went. On a bluff, overlooking the beach that Buddy ran on back in 1993, I set him free one last time. We all have stray dog stories, and these dogs eventually change our lives forever.
