Our little community recently lost a wonderful lady who left us to get her angel's wings. I will not give her name out of respect for her family's privacy, but I will tell why she will be so sorely missed by both humans and furs. She was THE charter member of our town and county's Humane Society and Animal Rescue. Thanks to her efforts we have a very active Humane Society now. Numerous times this tiny but dedicated lady would approach abusive owners and remove their animals at great risk for her own safety. If there was a question about an animal's safety, be it pup, cat, ferret, bunny, or whatever might be involved, she would either be there herself, or would know the right person to contact. She saw that our county animal shelter was clean and safe for the animals, and pushed for adoption of all. GOODBYE MY SWEET LADY!

An Arctic to Arctic Vacation

Dear Diary, we are finally home from our winter travels, or should I say "travails"? It was cold when we left West Virginia, just as cold when we got to Atlanta, where we stayed for several days with family. In fact, it was basically miserable weather-wise! Mommy bought some fleece-lined shoes for back up home in WV, but wound up wearing them in the not-so-sunny South! We left Atlanta 'n' headed for Mommy's family home in Florida, hoping for some nice, warmer weather. All we got there was lots of cold wind off the lake, 'n' threats of rain, sleet, FLURRIES (!) of all things! So much for my nice, leisurely walks along the lakefront. I did my business 'n' hurried right back to the house. THAT was on the GOOD days! Then it got dangerous, 'cause the arctic circle had apparently slipped it's moors 'n' became stranded in the deep South somewhere, blowing its cold air over Florida. The pawrents spent much of their vacation covering shrubs 'n' flowering plants. The deep-freeze has been devastating to all plant and citrus growers in Florida, as well as people that raise tropical fish 'n' other kinds of stock. Mommy says she remembers whole groves of citrus disappearing after these freezes, when she was growing up. So, it seems that that ol' Arctic circle weather is going to get you no matter how far you try to run away from it!
Now, to make matters worse, (or maybe it's Ol' Man Winter's sense of humor) the pawrents became ill on the way home to WV. First Daddy 'n' then Mommy, with it hitting them, one at a time, between Florida and North Carolina. All I did was sleep. I knew better than to mess with them. They were looking so pathetic 'n' were rather cranky. So....I'm just glad to be back in my own house, with my own toys, 'n' where we're s'posed to have arctic weather. Good ol' WVa! Happy New Year Y'all!!!

I'm Thankful for My Dogster Furiends!

Recently we have been asked in many of our groups to name something we are particularly thankful for. I thought 'n' thought about so many things I have in my life and in the life of my pawrents that make me thankful. However, one thing stood out above all the rest because of recent things going on in my family, and that is that I am truly thankful 'n' blessed for being a part of this entity called "Dogster". The prayers and warm vibes felt over the miles from one home to another when we are in need, truly are felt deep inside of us. Thank you for all your prayers during this time that my Daddy has been ill. We were so afraid he might have a recurrence of his cancer, but thanks to the Lord 'n' to all of your prayers, he is cancer free. However, he has a serious infection which was treated by surgery 'n' needs further treatment. His doctors call it the "Ohio Valley Crud". Apparently it's not so uncommon around here. Anyway, Mommy brought him home tonight, 'n' even though he's attached to an odd-looking contraption called an "oxygen machine", he'll soon be good as new. (Mommy's glad they got the Christmas tree up early, 'cause he's not s'posed to lift anything for several weeks!) You know, even though we had no turkey 'n' trimmings today, we still had a wonderful Thanksgiving 'n' now can look forward to a blessed 'n' Merry Christmas!

Today our reclining chair just about ATE me! I'm telling the truth. One minute I was resting comfortably on the floor, head under Daddy's feet (which were on said reclining chair) when all at once the chair comes down 'n' tries to gobble me up! Boy, did I set up a powerful screetch!!! Luckily Daddy froze, 'n' being the good operator of heavy-duty equipment 'n' chairs 'n' all, allowed me to escape with most of my dignity, as well as my head, intact! Next there's Mommy crying 'n' luving all over me 'cause her fur-baby was hurt. You bet I made sure to milk that situation! Although I did get an extra treat out of the experience, I really would not recommend it to anyfur else.

Bats in Her Belfry?

Daddy sometimes teases Mommy about being silly 'n' having "bats in her belfry". Last night, the two of us, namely Mommy 'n me, actually spotted one IN THE BEDROOM at 2:30 in the wee hours. I saw it first 'n' knew it was there, but tried to quietly crawl in bed with the pawrents where I hoped to be safe, but I still couldn't rest 'n' sleep. I knew it was there, but they didn't. Then Mommy heard a strange sound, sat up in bed, saw I had perked up too, 'n' looked around. Shortly, coming out of the bathroom 'n' flying toward the hall door, a BAT! Mommy shook Daddy awake, he said is it in the bedroom, if not, go back to sleep. Yeah, right. Well, to make this saga a wee bit shorter, tonight, as she was coming upstairs, Mommy once again saw the bat clinging to a vent. This is where real entertainment begins because I was the only calm one in the family. Mommy 'n' Daddy 'n' bat were all chasing around the house. I just watched 'n' shook my head, figuratively speaking. They finally got it to fly out one of the open doors. Boy, can those little fellows fly! We are all happy that the cute little thing didn't get hurt. He must have been so frightened, not to mention hungry. We don't grow too many bugs in the house, 'n' besides, I don't have fleas!

I am Shaki
I’m the Filching Queen!
I’ll filch anything,
dirty or clean.
Be it clothing, paper.
what-nots or straw,
I’ll be sure to get it,
by mouth or by paw!

Mommy puts the trash cans
way up high!
But I’ll have it figured out
by and by.
I know how to stretch
and I know how to claw!
I’ll get them, too,
by mouth or by paw!

The clothes in the laundry
I find on the floor,
“They’re mine,” I say,
as I fly out the door!
Old dirty socks are always
Fair game.
Mommy’s or Daddy’s?
They’re all the same!

I am Shaki
I’m the Filching Queen!
I’ll filch anything,
dirty or clean.

Lets see if it comes back to me! Just make a copy of this and put it in your diary so everyone knows what flavor you look like! Sprinkles count too!

I've Waited So Long

The sun’s begun to shine,
I stare at Mom, say,
“This sunbeam’s mine!
and here I’m going to stay!”

You go outside,
plant some seeds,
grow some flowers,
do good deeds!

I’m down for the count,
basking in the light
of soft warm beams.
Ask me to move?
You’re in for a fight!

I’ve waited in vain,
to see these beams,
while outside the rain,
beat against the screens.

The sunshine’s here,
Beaming inside,
I crawl into its warmth,
and there I shall bide.
