The Sasha Belle & Nadya Snow White Photo Contest!
These pups and their fur-mom are awesome! Be creative! I hear Sasha likes pups with creativity!
Sasha Bell writes, "As many of you know (and Nika can attest to) my Mom has been complaining for a while that we live to far to go to the Hike in a few weeks. Mom doesn't want to do the remote hiking because, well it's just not the same now is it! She really wants to help out and she has come up with a solution.
Mom is going to pledge $50 to one of the Husky Heaven pups who WILL be going to the hike. To decide who will get the $50 we have decided (with Nika's help) to have a photo contest. Pups who want mom's pledge need to come up with a picture asking me for my pledge. You can distort images, add words, basically anything with the one stipulation that you have to ask, or beg for my pledge in the picture.
You can submit as many pictures as you want but the best will win.
Submit your pictures by midnight Wednesday September, 12 2007.
I will announce the winner on Thursday September 13.
Good Luck!!!

Woohoooo! I am having the best day ever. Guess what today...April 27th is my first day off restrictions. That means that I no longer have to stay away from the other dogs. I can play, play, play. I woke up this morning and I was able to go play with everyone else. When we go up my foster mom just let me run out into the living room and wrestle with the other dogs; I was soooo surprised that I actually didn't know what to do. I had such a good time. Shay and I played for almost an hour and Chila liked chewing on my legs while I tried to hop over the furniture. It was so much fun to actually see my playmates. My foster mom says that I play completely differently now than before my surgery. Well what does she expect, I can see! I don't have to scream when the other dogs wrestle with me because I actually can see them coming now. What a relief that my jail time is over. I thought my mom would never let me play again, it was the longest time out I ever had. I know that I couldn't play so that no one would scratch my eyes but it was awful lonely. The good thing is that my screaming to get out of the kitchen is finally over and mommy will now be able to rest again:) She complained a lot about the noise but I couldn't help it.
I am so thankful that I am finally doing better and soon I will get neutered and be available for adoption. My new family is out there somewhere. I am also really happy that so many people care about me and are sending money to help pay for my surgery. They don't even know me and they love me. It's amazing how nice humans are. Thanks guys.

Huron and I went to the vet yesterday for his one week post surgery exam. He was so excited to be back at the office with his friends and what a tremendous difference it was to be in the waiting room with him when he could see the other dogs. Last time he had no idea about the coming and goings in the office and this time...well let's just say my arm may never be the same! The doctor checked his eye pressure and it was perfect; any elevation in the pressure would cause a concern about him having glaucoma but steady pressure is a great sign. He also had his stitches removed that were in the corners of his eyes. He is such an amazing dog that he just sat there with a vet tech behind him and the doctor and I in front talking to him and let her take out the stitches. No numbing agent or anything! I asked the doctor if it were common for dogs to growl and be muzzled during this process and she said that is most often the case. I also asked if Huron had ever been growley with her and she looked at me kind of shocked and said that he has always been a perfect gentleman. After all that he has been through I have never seen him get angry about anything, truly amazing.
During the next week I will slowly wean him off of the eye meds and pills and he'll be back for a recheck in two weeks. I have to watch him closely for any changes in his eyes during this time. We can also loose the e-collar! Thank God because he ate both of the ones that I had and I have been duct taping them together everyday before work. The doctor said that the dissolvable stitches in his eyes should be fine in a week so only one more week of restrictions and then he can play with the dogs. I can't wait for that because he is quite dissatisfied with his kitchen confinement and gets all the dogs howling in disgust for the way he is being unfairly jailed. I have to get some audio of it. They are all wretched singers.
After the vet we made a stop at my parents house to visit my mom, dad, 4 year old niece and 9 months old nephew. Huron loved the kids and went right up to the baby and licked him and he adored the four year old too and sat next her for some attention. The one he was most crazy about was my dad. He LOVED him and they played for a half an hour. Huron play bowed my dad, my dad play bowed him. It was like a circus act. He just couldn't get enough of my dad and kept taking him by the hand to get his attention, too cute! The main thing that was really nice was that Huron was not scared in a new environment. If I would have brought him there before surgery he would have never just walked into the house he would have needed so much coaching and edible rewards. Yesterday he really showed me how far he has come in a short time of having his vision back. It was really so beautiful to watch.

Huron is home and doing well, He looks kind of funny with his shaved eyes and the blue stitches in the corners of his eyes sticking out but he is so handsome it doesn't make that much of a difference. He also has dissolvable stitches in his eyes that kind of form a bubble on the eye; it is really interesting. He is groggy and tired but happy to be home and he will be receiving 4 different drops in his eyes 3 times a day for over a week. He is also on 2 oral medications; one antibiotic and one glaucoma medication, to keep the pressure in his eyes stable. We will watch for complications and take him back to the ophthalmologist next week for follow up and suture removal. For now he has to wear his e-collar 24/7 for over a week and he will have to stay separated from our other dogs for a few weeks at least. Any trauma to his eyes could cause vision loss and the other dogs are not super careful.
The staff at Katonah Bedford Veterinary Center was amazing. They took great care of Huron and gave him lots of attention. He even got some Winnie the Pooh stickers on is e-collar to cheer him up...I think it worked. Dr. Mosnic was so careful with him (and me, the worrying foster mama) and made sure that I knew everything that happened over the past few days. I am ever grateful that the staff at the vet hospital for making Huron's surgery as painless as possible for both of us:) I will keep you all updated about his progress.

I just got off the phone with Huron's doctor. He did fine for the surgery and was able to get one lens implanted in his eye. The doctor said he did well and is groggy but will probably be able to come home tomorrow. Thank goodness. I know he had a lot of guardian angels looking out for him today.

Hey All,
He is doing okay at the vet hospital tonight; when I called they said that he has been the mayor of the vet hospital, walking around the grounds, peeing on everything he can, sucking up to the nurses. He will be going in for surgery 1st thing tomorrow and the whole thing takes about an hour per eye. Poor Huron will probably not get the state of the art lenses that will give him extra focusing help because his eye quality is poor but at least his cataracts will be gone and a whole new world will open up for him. I hope that he will be okay tomorrow and will come home by Wednesday. I have to say that although I miss him a bit Kai is enjoying the time off from him and my house is oh-so quiet. We'll be back to normal in no time. I will let you all know what happens tomorrow.
Thanks for the good thoughts for the boy.

Just heard from Hurons' foster mom. Good news, Bad news - isn't it always?
He did test negative for lyme disease! YEAH!!!
However, his retinal eye pressure was increased since the last time. It tested normal before and now is showing some increased pressure. Additionally, he has thin drainage in his eyes. So what this means is that he has an increased chance for glaucoma in the long term. That said the specialist still feels he is a good candidate for the cataract surgery. However, time is of the essence for the surgery... so this will all take place tomorrow. Please keep good thoughts for Huron... he needs them all!
If all goes well with the surgery, he will be put on medication to help prevent glaucoma. In addition, it seems that he will need to be walked only with harnesses. Apparently that article about increase pressure in the eye does hold true.
Every cent helps.. so please consider helping Huron by making a donation.
