Andy’s Story:

New Year's eve Andy was spooked by fireworks and went missing in Westport, CT while visiting from out of state. He is a male, tan and white Corgi (large ears, short legs, and NO TAIL), 11 years old and 30 lbs. No longer wearing his collar but is microchipped. His family has remained in the area, desperately searching every day and night.

Updates:

1/14/12 sighting at Winslow Dog Park in Westport, CT. A professional tracking dog followed Andy's scent for several miles before it abruptly ended. It is the expert’s opinion that Andy MAY have been picked up and driven off at that point. There were no signs of injury.

1/20/12 multiple independent sightings in Norwalk, CT

1/26/12 Crosspost from “Bring Andy Home”
I would like to express our gratitude and amazement at the number of Andy fan helpers we had last night. It was truly remarkable, what an unbelievable group of people we have been blessed with to help on our search for Andy.
Because of all the flyers posted, or handed out, and the organizing, and of course our stake out last night, we know Andy’s neighborhood and general schedule! It is such an amazing relief and comfort to me to know where he is currently and not always be chasing behind him by several days. Now I am concentrating on his retrieval. I will monitor his behavior and patterns to best establish locations for traps etc. Public knowledge as always is key, and continuing to make neighbors around where we have covered aware is very important to determine his pattern. It is very important that Andy feel safe there and I feel the more we search for him the less he will be comfortable, it doesn’t serve any purpose because we cannot approach him he is too scared.
I will post updates and ask for help when needed because you are all the best!! Time for Andy to come home to his family!!! Xoxoxo

2/15/12 most calls of “possible” sightings continue to be in but NOT limited to the East Norwalk area. All are investigated thoroughly. At least a 10 mile radius from Westport/Norwalk and possibly further cannot be ruled out! Local volunteers continue to need help posting flyers, promoting community awareness, and physically checking ALL shelters. At this point the goal is to have enough reliable sightings within a relatively small area so traps and night video cameras can be relocated as appropriate. Andy’s parents are diligently working with multiple consultants and experts, and are still exploring any and all options.

2/18/12 Andy and Ozzy on Channel 12 Connecticut’s “Pet Talk”

2/24/12 Karin TarQwyn, a nationally renouned Private Investigator and missing dog expert has joined the search for Andy. Karin and her 5 tracking dogs are on their way from NE to CT. Please keep sharing Andy’s flyer far and wide. Based on the pattern of most recent sightings, they are expanding the search area! “Any and all eyes, ears and cross posting is much appreciated.”

Please keep up the prayers and good vibes. check his Facebook page for the most current updates and specific requests for assistance. THANK YOU if you are able to help in any way.

OZZY Missing in Fairfield, CT and possibly beyond

Please share Ozzy's flyer and info on Dogster, Facebook, retweet on Twitter, blogs, and anywhere you can think of. You never know when a friend may know someone who lives in the area and can help. We need as many eyes and sniffers out there as possible … someone who will call his mom IMMEDIATELY if seen. Thank you for anything you can do to help!

1/27/12 Crosspost
OZZY will be missing 3 weeks tomorrow and we are desperate to find him and get him home! ....
If anyone wants to meet me this weekend to pick up flyers please email me at laurie.dexter@aol.com or call me at 203-247-1747. We need to continue to plaster Fairfield and Westport to get the word out.

With so few sightings and in an effort to get a better understanding of Ozzy's location I have been working with a couple reputable animal communicators. Both say he is alive and well and within miles of home. One feels he may have been picked up by a car (as suspected by the tracker) and taken to Weston where the people have taken him in to their home and are caring for him. Of course we don't know if this is true but in case it is we need to post flyers in that area to make them aware of the fact that Ozzy has a family who loves him, is searching for him and wants to bring him home where he belongs.
If any of you live in Weston or are willing to post flyers in Weston please contact me ASAP.
I also need someone to post in Westport - downtown, Post Road, main arteries and by schools - let me know if you can do that - maybe team up with a friend.
I am still focusing my efforts on Fairfield which is quite large and has many different neighborhoods to cover but the good news is people are starting to see our flyers and become aware of OZZY.
Thanks to all of you for your continued support, suggestions, and efforts to help us BRING OZZY HOME!!! xo L

1/28/12 Crosspost
It is 3 weeks tonight that Ozzy went missing. Unfortunately we have had no sightings in over a week so either Ozzy is staying out of sight and only traveling at night OR someone has picked him up and not called the authorities. Either way the most important thing we can do is create more public awareness by posting flyers EVERYWHERE in Fairfield, Westport, and Weston and perhaps even venturing into the bordering areas of Norwalk and Bridgeport. It is also essential to keep reminding the shelters and vets and groomers that Ozzy is out there and could be brought to them at any time so they need to be on alert. This all requires volunteers since it takes time to accomplish this. Anyone who is willing to help please come to Barnes and Noble tomorrow at NOON (Sun. 1/29/12 in Westport on Post Road) to pick up flyers and determine a section to cover. Anyone who is willing to make phone calls and emails just contact me at laurie.dexter@aol.com and we can discuss a call list. Anyone who is willing to post Ozzy's info on internet sites or contact different media outlets can also contact me on my email and we can get more of that in motion also. Thanks to all of you who have been instrumental in getting the Ozzy campaign in motion - we are starting to get some momentum now and need to keep it going and expand our net so that someone, somewhere will see him and make that crucial call which will bring him home where he belongs. Thanks to all!!! xo L

2/6/12 Update: last week, sightings were on OLD DAM Road in Fairfield off of South Pine Creek - prior to that on Unquowa near Roger Ludlow school. Most recent “probable” sighting near Osborne Hill High School in Fairfield

2/18/12 Ozzy and Andy on Channel 12 Connecticut’s “Pet Talk”

Please remember Ozzy is running scared!!! If seen, do NOT chase him, IMMEDIATELY call his mom or Animal Control and TRY to keep him in sight from a distance until help arrives. Thank you!

- post FLIERS and more FLIERS EVERYWHERE - minimum a 10 mile radius of where your pet went missing - see Posters and Fliers Tips using the "five words, five seconds rule"

- ask postal workers and delivery personnel (UPS, Fed Ex, etc) to help distribute fliers and be on the lookout. taxi cabs, bus drivers, and children also make excellent spotters

- notify and send fliers to local VETS, SHELTERS, Humane societies, and Rescue organizations (esp breed specific if applicable)

- STAPLES stores will often make 100 free color copies for lost animals - a good black and white flier with clear picture may help manage expenses too

- place ads in your local NEWSPAPERS

- FindToto.com and/or PetAmberAlert.com will call neighbors in the area (for a fee)

- post online in classified Lost ads by state and city (see links below)
- check Found ads frequently because most sites do not automatically coordinate losts with founds
- also do a quick search at different sites to make sure your pet is NOT listed for Adoption or for Sale

Public Forums: click "Forums" above and post there. it may be helpful to list city and state in your thread title

Notify Dogsters in your area: ask local pals to be on the lookout for you! if they do not mind, maybe they can help you post FLIERS!

** try to Keep the Missing Pet's Page UPDATED including specifics about exact location last seen and CONTACT INFORMATION to the extent that you feel comfortable.
- go to your account and add "MISSING, LOST or STOLEN" as part of your name
- do not be shy about listing specifically how people can help
- you may also want to ask pals to help spread the word by CROSS-POSTING your page to their friends and family in the area. you can request this on your page, in forums, and/or groups.
- if you have a FLIER posted on your page or at a link, we found that many wanted to copy it and help spread fliers all over town especially to places they go during their normal routines (businesses, VETS, Pet stores, dog parks, grocery stores, etc).
*Note: Fliers copied off of your Dogster page usually do not print clearly. It may be helpful to put flier on an outside link and you can put that link on your page for pals to copy from, print, and share.
- don't forget that fliers can be faxed and emailed quickly esp to vets, shelters and rescue groups.
- we've even had a few Dogsters put fliers on their vehicles. Ha ha Aroooo!
Dogsters are pretty amazing most of the time!

Good Luck on your searches! Pmail me if ya have ANY questions.

#3 Humane TRAPPING Advice from Experts

TRAPPING ADVICE TO HELP WITH INJURED DOG from Corolla Fleeger, ACO

I wanted to provide some suggestions. I've trapped frightened scared dogs for several years and intensively while assisting in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and Rita.

As the dog is injured, when you set the trap, ensure that you cover the trap so that the dog does not feel too exposed (especially after he is trapped) and also place soft bedding inside the trap so the dog does not step directly onto metal to get inside the trap. I would actually recommend utilizing materials from the surrounding area of where the trap is placed. If the dog is sleeping in a specific area that you are able to place the trap on level ground or near it, place it there and utilize material from around that surrounding to cover the bottom of the trap and even around the sides and top of the trap. I would actually recommend placing dirt from the area on the bottom of the trap that covers the metal. This also allows for comfort of the dog if he is trapped but the trap isn't checked every 4 hours or so. You might want to disguise the outside and top of the trap with vegetation from the area as well. This will also allow for some protection from the elements but also familiarity of the materials. I've enclosed pictures (click here at bottom of page and page 2) to give you an example of traps that I set up for the dogs whom were more difficult to trap or more weary. Remember to test the trap a few times to ensure that the disguise and cover does not interfere with the trapping mechanism or the gate security.

As the dog may not be entirely familiar to his surroundings, I would suggest placing multiple traps close to the locations where he had been spotted. Place wet food or his favorite type of dog food that has liquid or oil with the food in the back of the trap and drizzle/trail some of it along the trap to the outside of the trap through the entrance of the trap. Also get another few cans and use the extra food to extend the path of drizzle or trail to better optimize smell and coverage.

Also, the best bait for dogs appears to be bacon. Please note that you want to check the traps frequently, especially if there are cats in the area as cats are typically the first animal you will trap. To keep some of the cats away, place Valerian root or catnip away from the trap and high up such as on a tree branch or on top of a wall. This may be more appealing to the cat than the dog food or bacon and detract the cat from the trap and optimize your chances of getting the dog. Place a trail of wet food or small bacon bits from about 4 feet from the entrance of the trap down a trail to the back of the inside of the trap. Place some sort of obstacle so the dog can not reach the food from the back of the trap and accidentally shake the trap to close without the dog inside the trap. Place a small heap inside the trap but about 3 inches from the edge of the outside of the trap. This provides a reward for the dog's curiousity. Trail a little more from there and on top of the trigger plate and continue it to the back corner of the trap where you place a large heap of the wet food and bacon. Orient that heap in relation to the corner of the side of the trap where the hook is for the trigger to the back gate. This side is more sensitive and more likely to close with the dog in the trap. You might also want to place some bacon pieces and wet food under the trap below the trigger/trip plate. This way, if the dog eats all the food without actually stepping on the trigger plate, he will be more inclined to search for the smell and would probably step on the trigger/trip plate and thereby trapping the dog.

Do not leave any sharp containers or cans in the trap.

I hope that some of this may assist you in the trapping of the dog in a timely and safe manner. If you have any question, please feel free to contact me at any time.

Suggestions from gs.com used to help FIND Duke Lost & Found in MA

* We need sightings to work with **most important**
* Traps, preferably 6 feet, need to be set.
* Carry baggies of hotdogs and leash AROUND the WAIST at all times.
* Some dogs head straight, others circle. MOST circle. Make the crate/trap so comfortable that you would want to stay in there!
*Emphasize to searchers/finders to CALL, and NOT TO LOSE SIGHT OF HIM and NOT TO APPROACH HIM.
*Once found, get down low, no quick movements. Relaxed posture. Calm tone of voice. Use soft wide slip lead (oh joy), no rattling chains or collars. Very few dogs get caught with a leash, that's why trap is preferred.
*Lost dogs are terrified of groups of people. They might hunker down in the grass, and not respond to anything, including another dog.

TRAPPING – HUMANE CAGE TRAPS

Animal Control Officers (ACOs) & others use “cage traps” in a variety of sizes to catch domestic & wild animals in a safe, humane manner. Check on availability before you need one. The cage front has a bi-fold type door which “locks” in an up/open position when trap is “set.” A “footplate” is located about 3/4 of the way into the cage. When stepped on, it releases a side rod, which allows the front door to quickly close on an angle, trapping the dog. If the proper size cage isn’t used, the door will attempt to close but might come down to rest on their rump instead. It will startle but not hurt. When the dog backs out and clears the door, it will spring shut.

Where to set the cage? A good spot is in the immediate area where you have one or more verified sightings. Don’t delay. Locate a resident or business owner who will let you set up the cage on their property, ideally using same areas where the dog has been seen. Choose “easy” access spots for monitoring, yet private - for the dog’s sake and to avoid prying eyes of children & adults. Ask an ACO to help you explain to people how the trap works and its importance to this rescue.

Established law sets minimum times required to check traps. Checking more frequently is highly recommended and necessary, especially in severe or cold weather. Be advised that area residents will not appreciate their pets being locked up in your cage.

Make sure the cage is on steady ground and doesn’t wobble.
Suggestions: Use wet dog food with a portion of: meatballs, roast beef, stinky cheese, hotdogs, etc. De-bone any meat you use, don’t risk someone’s dog choking. Don’t use cat food. It attracts too many felines as well as skunks, possums and raccoons. Precious time is wasted when a trap has "unwanted guests.” Set food at rear of trap on shallow plate. Hang a hotdog inside, from the top & near the rear. Put a few small bits of food outside trap leading inside. Don’t overload area outside trap with food, a common mistake. The goal is to entice a hungry dog into the cage. Put in a water bowl. Cages with a rear door option make it easier to change food & release unwanted guests.

Tip - Use handicap grabber tongs to reach/adjust items in cages. Dogs don’t like walking on wire grates. Using a towel, cover the bottom grates up to and over, but not under, the footplate. Do not have items sticking out the front entrance as they will jam, prevent the door from closing securely and make it possible for the dog to get out. Items to place inside: a section of the dog’s blanket, dog hair, toy, same items from other dog in house, owner’s used T-shirt or pillowcase. Anything familiar to use? Use scents/hair from another dog. Lost male dog? Use facecloth swiped with urine of female dog or one in heat.

Place a straight stick through the bars about 2 inches in front of the footplate and about 3 inches up, so the dog has to step over it, placing paw directly on footplate (adjust for dog’s size). Watch rod on side of cage. Cages are generally covered to protect the dog from sun, rain, chilling winds & snow. Camouflage with dark green or brown shower curtain, tarp or other sturdy cloth. A bale of straw can be pulled apart in blocks and used to insulate the trap and make it cozy. Cover most of cage except front door area. Position a few pine branches at the back end, but keep it open so dog can see through and food scent drifts out. Place small branches & twigs on top to weight it and give it a natural and “den-like” appearance. Toss leaves, not sticks, just inside the entrance over wire grates still exposed. Secure covers & branches so they don’t fall into entrance, jam the door or rod. Always test trap function.

Anyone who monitors the cage should be comfortable with releasing and/or re-setting the trap. If not, assign “duties.” List two names with phone numbers for “emergency” contacts on 8 x 11 paper. Put in protective sheet/Ziploc bag & secure to cage with twist ties.

eta: GOOD NEWS Juno and Puppy are Missing/FOUND in Metairie,- LA (near New Orleans)

UPDATE: Feb 19, 2010 Juno and Lucy were recovered from the St. Tammany Parish Dept of Animal Services in Abita Springs ONE hour away from where they went missing. Thanks to a tip from a Craigslist poster that saw them listed on Petharbor.com. Unfortunately, they passed through TWO shelter systems, neither of which bothered to scan them for microchips AND the shelters HAD been emailed Juno and Lucy's flyer recently. Good lesson why anyone with a lost dog MUST continue to physically GO TO THE SHELTERS every few days even if your dog is chipped!

JUNO and LUCY's family is frantic with grief and very concerned for their health and safety. They are missing in a VERY high traffic area. Both dogs are VERY friendly, but may become skittish the longer they are on the streets. One sighting was in someone's backyard. By the time the owner arrived, the man (not the caller) had "scared" them away because he has cats :(

If you don't mind, please take a moment to help spread the word to anyone who lives in the Metairie/New Orleans area. Share Juno's page link, message, or flyer on Dogster, MySpace, Facebook, retweet on Twitter, blogs, and anywhere you can think of. You never know when a friend may know someone who lives or travels in their area. Thank you for anything you can do to help!

Timber LOST on I-40 between ARKANSAS and OKLAHOMA

Jan. 29 UPDATE Cross Post

link to Timber's FLYER http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s10/nwgang4/timberflyer2.jpg

There is a possibility that Timber was sighted (Pulaski County, Arkansas??)
Please send Timber's flyer to EVERYONE you know in Arkansas.

Please pray. Thanks so much. Below is a message from Timber's mommy.
Lots of Love,
Sasha

Jan 29, 2009 11:14 AM

I just got off the phone with the Humane Society and they referred me to another place. Neither place has Timber at this point. They didn't seem terribly interested in helping me either.

At this point, I hope that Timber goes back to the assisted living facility where he was spotted to eat because they said they were putting food out for him, and hopefully he'll let someone get close enough to him to catch him.

(even if this dog isn't Timber, I hope someone catches him so they can get his injuries taken care of and find his family if he has one)

----------------
original CROSS POST from Timber's owner:

Timber is a 6y/o 109 Lb Native American Indian Dog. He is brown, white, and black, and he looks very much like a wolf (see picture above). While moving to Las Vegas, somewhere between Little Rock Arkansas and wherever we stopped in Oklahoma (about 2 1/2-3 hours after we started driving from Little Rock) traveling West along I-40, the back of our dog's kennel busted and he must have jumped out. We discovered he was missing at around 6:30am on Saturday January 10th, 2009.

Timber is chipped, but as we just got it done a couple days before we left it is not yet registered. It is in the process of being registered.

Timber is wearing a wide black collar with no tags (his collar with the tags slipped off and was in the kennel) and also a choke chain.

If anyone has seen him or has found him, please please please call!!! My number is (501) 350-2093

Amanda Hensley

*We are pretty sure he jumped as we were exiting the interstate because his kennel was secured to the trailer we were pulling and it was at the front of the trailer. If he had jumped when we were driving the wind would have been so strong that he wouldn't have been able to jump clear of the trailer, and there was no evidence (no hair, blood, anything) that he was hit by the trailer.
