We are 3 basenjis (me-Bunmi, Chica and Rascal) and a lab mix (Spinner) in my pack.
Spinner is what our vet calls “special.” He truly has the shortest attention span of any dog I’ve ever known. Of course, he is frightened to leave his own yard.
Rascal came from an excellent breeder in Virginia and would never entertain the idea of leaving his beloved yard/house or the people that inhabit. Chica (BRAT Basenji) came from a kill shelter. She was emaciated, heartworm positive and had just weaned a litter of pups. Chica has taken a journey or two, but only because she didn’t realize there was no leash in the hand of the human who was running behind her--cheering her on.
I, in great contrast, like to keep things interesting. I dig, chew, shred or any other activity that might grant me freedom to play with children. I especially love the girl, T, who reads to me the most interesting stories.
The school’s out bell is my call to action. I don't want to leave my people, but regrettably my people are only capable of producing grandchildren. Did you know that brand new grandchildren are simply of no use for play?
Today I had just finished the perfect and heavily disguised escape hole when Spinner sounded the alarm. I don't like barking, but Spinner's screaming makes me really upset. With all that infuriating noise, I had precious little time to take my leave.
Usually, Chica will yodel or snark her protest, but no…not this time. Chica planted her silly self mid escape route and proceeded to take a siesta. It is too late to dig another hole and I'm certainly not going to try and move "her majesty"
What’s an escape artist to do?
