Arrival Story:
My mom and dad volunteered for a rescue group and were sent out on a Chihuahua hunt for a friend. They decided to start with their local shelter, and I’m so glad they did! They had promised their friend that they would find a shelter or rescue group nearby that had a Chihuahua up for adoption. However, they never expected to find two within a matter of minutes! We were brought into the shelter (a high-kill shelter that euthanizes by gas chamber) by a lady who said she found us as strays four months earlier. No one claimed us at the shelter, and things were not looking very good for me and my girlfriend, Muffin. Everyone thought I was too old and fat (I was only around six years old at the time and have since lost weight.) To complicate things even more, the shelter wanted us to go together because they said Muffin was depressed and wouldn’t eat without me. My mom and dad agreed to take us since time was so limited. They called their friend, and the three of them decided that they really needed to see how bonded Muffin and I were. If we were in fact bonded, then my mom and dad would find a home to take both of us. If not, then Muffin would meet their friend’s parents and possibly be adopted by them.Their friend took Muffin home, and I went home with my mom and dad, who had already agreed to foster me until a forever home could be found. Later that night, Muffin got sick, and by the time morning rolled around, she was in bad shape. Her foster mom rushed her to the vet. It turns out Muffin wouldn’t eat because she was close to death, not because she missed me…Her uterus was so infected that if her foster mom hadn’t rushed her to the vet early the next morning, she would’ve died! She had what is known as pyometra. The vet did an emergency spay and sent her home on lots of medicine. I was sad for Muffin, but I really liked it in my foster home. After Muffin recovered, she was able to meet her foster mom’s parents. Muffin was exactly what they had been looking for, and they adopted her soon after that. Muffin is doing very well and is spoiled to pieces. My dad fell so in love with me after I smothered him in kisses that he couldn’t stand to let me go, so here I am. I am cranky and protective at times, but they love me anyway. My parents always tell me what an ambassador I am to show people that finding shelter/rescue dogs of any size or breed IS possible.
