Arrival Story:
I always wanted a Sheltie. I've always thought they are the prettiest and best dogs in the world. My husband, then boyfriend, bought me Meggie as a birthday present when she was 1 year old. He knew how to win my heart and it worked! We bought her from a breeder who was selling Meggie because she was too shy to continue on as an adult show dog. Meggie remained shy her whole life but was extremely loyal and loving with me and Freddie. We bred her when she was 2 years old with another sable Sheltie and kept one of the puppies for ourselves. That's how we got Freddie! Freddie was the friendliest dog and had the best personality. Everyone who met him, loved him, and he loved them in return. He and Meggie were extremely close and loved each other dearly. They were quite the pair and such a joy in our lives. Meggie lived to be 14 years old. She came down with pancreatitis and died a month later. Her vet and I tried all kinds of measures to extend her life but it was not meant to be. She was so sick and was suffering. It broke my heart but I knew I had to be strong and let her go. She wasn't having fun anymore and it was the kindest thing I could do for all the love she gave me for 13 years. So we had her put down. I was by her side the whole time and held her as she took her last breath. Freddie was never the same after Meggie died. He just gave up and grieved himself to death over losing his mommy and companion. He also had developed pancreatitis. The vet was so sorry to tell me this and that he also had a growth around his heart. I couldn't put Freddie through the pain I put Meggie though since he wasn't as strong as she was. So when Freddie let me know, I had to put him down to. I held him as he took his last breath too. He was 12 years old and died 2 months after Meggie did. I was so heartbroken losing my 2 babies within 2 months of each other. I'm still not over it but I know it was their time to go. I also know they are waiting for me at Rainbow Bridge where we will meet again one day. It was 4 years until I was ready to get another dog. Of course I had to get another Sheltie! But, I wanted to get a different color than the sable and white like Meggie and Freddie were. We ended up rescuing a blue merle Sheltie. You can read about Dixie and her new brother Jake on their Dogster pages.

Meggie's AKC registered name was MARABROOKS MEGGIE O'MINE. She was born to a breeder in NC. Both of Meggie's parents were show dogs and she was a show dog in the puppy class and won 3 ribbons. We bred Meggie with another sable Sheltie and kept Freddie. He was the last of 6 puppies and the runt of the litter. We never registered him but he was a purebred Shetland Sheepdog.
