The next morning the map presented itself as a crisp and important looking memo reading
“Re: Finding Your Way…Follow the directions on the enclosed map to complete the next step on your journey. Should you run into any sort of difficulties, please do not fail to recall those little poppets in the keg that you packed away to ensure your safety. If you do not remember those, please check with Miss Angel as she will no doubt know their location and be prepared to use them.”
And on the next page, a detailed map was included, with rest stops and good picnic areas marked. It had a small smiley face in the lower corner with a label that said – stop here tonight!
“Well, that is certainly more like it!” announced Auntie as she showed the map and instructions to Flicka. Flicka smiled and agreed that Auntie had done a good job in correcting the maps attitude.
After breakfast the group broke camp again. Savvy rode along with Dubs on the front of her saddle. Little Zaidie rode on Dubbin Junyer, next to them. Dubs entertained herself by singing songs to Zaidie who good naturedly hummed along. The sun was shining and all the pups felt at ease, and very glad to be away from Cortez’ Palace. Though Samoa did frequently sigh that a “real beer and a feather bed” would have been welcome.
After a time they noticed that Dubbin ‘a Ferd was flying overhead – until that moment they hadn’t realized he had disappeared around the time they started heading for the Palace.
“That bird must be a good sign. Maybe we ought to be following him now...” Said Demon.
The map in Auntie’s paw said “Doh.” And she gave it a sharp rap on the wagon seat, after which it turned into a copy of the Sporting News featuring a picture of Demon crossing the finish line at the Iditarod. The caption read “Hero Dog.”
“That’s more like it.”Auntie said.
