At the sight of the sign, Ferd took to his wings shaking off the reins of the wagon horses. They picked up their heads and watched him soar away. Savannah climbed into the front of the wagon to drive. Dust clouds near the trail showed that the outriders – all the other dogs of the expedition were riding in towards the wagon. Time for a consult over the mysterious “signs.”
Demon rode up first, with Samoa close behind him. Samoa winked at Angel and said “A couple of nights in a posh hotel sounds pretty good to me, what do you say?” Angel blushed deeply and yanked her turban down, trying to maintain dignity.
“Why would a casino be out in the middle of nowhere like this?” asked Demon.
“Because if you are riding along through this dust plagued landscape, what could be better than a resort with pools and cold beer and soft beds?” asked Samoa in return.
“That does sound nice…” Savannah replied. “And dinner in a nice restaurant instead of having to cook over a fire!”
“Well, I think we should stop by. For a day or two at least.” Said Kirby, mopping his brow from the hot sun.
The pups seemed to agree and the band made their way up a short rise until – in the distance – a bright golden globe of a building appeared.
“I guess that would be the place.” Kirby said, taking note of the marquee with ‘CORTEZ PALACE” emblazoned on it. The structure itself, on closer approach – appeared to be a combination of a Pyramid shape, with an old fashioned looking thatched entryway. In the doorway stood an enormous dog – perhaps a Newfoundland. He was white with black spots and a happy, well fed demeanor.
“Welcome, Welcome to the Palace of Cortez! I am your host and will guarantee a wonderful experience to the weary traveler!”
“That would be me…” said Samoa, easing out of his saddle. “How about a beer, pard?”
“Of course, just step through here to the saloon and tell the barkeep what you would like. First tankard on the house!”
Samoa, then Kirby and Tanner quickly stepped into the shade of the thatched structure and disappeared inside.
“Well, little Miss” said the large, spotted dog to Dubs “I’ll bet you would like to know where the penny candy shop is?”
“O, yez!” said Dubs, and a sweetfaced motherly dog came out, and led her and Zaidie in to the complex.
“Hmmn.” Mused Demon. “Something for everyone…”
“That’s what we aim for!” said the spotted giant. ”We like all our guests to be content.”
Savannah noticed that Flick and Lucas were standing close together and at a little distance from the entry way to Cortez’ Palace. She knew they had great instincts and often were more thoughtful about a situation. And something about this situation just didn’t seem “right” to Savvy. Angel and Auntie also seemed to be hanging back.
Savvy edged away, catching Demon’s eye. She moved over towards Flicka and he nodded at her – and looked concerned. “I don’t like those babies going in there.” He whispered.
“Do you think it is dangerous?” Savannah whispered back at him. Just then a warm presence stepped up close behind her, startling her. It was the spotted dog and he took her paw and tugged her towards the entrance. “Come on, little lady. Nothing to worry about!” Savvy felt herself begin to be persuaded and stepped along with the spotted dog. She was startled at a high pitched yelp from the doorway of the Palace and out ran Dubs and Zaidie.
“NO LAK!” Dubs shouted. “NO LAK!” and leaped into Savvy’s arms.
