Boy, this stuff only looks boring on tv. In fact it is an exciting and fast paced game of wits that only the strong and fleet of foot can suceed at.
This is how I began what I hope will prove to be a long and successful golf career.
Last night we started out of the yard for evening walkies. Across the street from us lives a young man and he had cleverly used his push mower to trim his front lawn into a replica of a mini-golf course. He and some of the other gents from the street, with the aid of some beers, had engaged in an elaborate 19 hole golf match.
They were loud and enthusiastic. Mama was not paying the proper attention and when my eye was caught by the golfing extravaganza, I took off. Cries of "No Dogs, No Dogs!" didn't slow me down as I took a quick gallop through the crowd of club waving golfers. Samoa and Dubs cheerfully ran in my wake.
Then, one of the golfers who seemed to be unaware of the dog presence, raised his club and struck his bright red golf ball. It rolled forward tantalizingly. And before Mama could stop me, I was upon it!
I grabbed it and galloped back into our yard and let the other pups and Mama chase me round and round. Finally, lured by a combination of sweet-talking, foot stomping and grumbling from Mama, I came to her and released the ball.
I only pretended I was going to do it! And she fell for it! She always does!
(Later I heard one of the guys say something about a dog hazard on the 14th hole. And Mama says she will buy him some golf balls to make up for that one and others we will probably steal in the future. )
