Arrival Story:
Twister was my Black Labrador Retriever, and he was the first thing I had ever learned to love. I had gotten him as a birthday present back in 2000. I had been contemplating a dog for a while. One to call my own. We went and picked him up the day he turned 6weeks old. I believe we got him around May 25th, I believe. He was the sweetest puppy and got his name in the funniest way. The day we brought him home he grabbed his tail and ran in circles. Thus he was given the name Twister. Twister was always a good dog. And he was smart. At the age of 2 he knew 25 commands. And 15 signs. He had never been to obedience school and had never had a personal trainer, just me. He didn’t listen to anyone but me, my dad considered him a “bad dog” because he didn’t like being around guns or retrieving dead animals. Yes, he was a full-blooded lab but he was more of a companion. My dad doesn’t understand what a companion dog is though. Here we go. May 25th 2000. We went all the way to Orangeburg to pick up my birthday present. A male black Labrador puppy. Something I’d been waiting for since I had turned 10. Oh how I had been waiting for this! A dog of my own. Something no one could take away. It was all mine. No one could call this theirs. He was mine, all mine. When we picked him up there was another puppy with him. There were identical. I couldn’t choose the one I wanted. So I put them to the test. I walked away and chose the one that had so lovingly trotted after me that same day. We were best friends from the start. I remember staying home that day because I had stayed up that whole night with him. Making sure he was comfortable. I slept on the floor with him. I even remember his sweet puppy kisses. That very first night. He was the smallest puppy I had ever seen at 6 weeks. And the second I held him in my arms. I knew it was love.
