Been a while since I wrote my first diary entry. I wanted to update everyone about my eyes. I can't see anything anymore. I have learned to smell things to find where they are and I can tell where mommy's voice is coming from when she calls me. I went to a doggie playgroup this weeks. They had this really cool ball that made noise. I didn't really care about playing with the other doggies but I had a blast with the ball. Mommy is going to try and find me one for home. Mommy is going on vacation for a while next month and I'm going, with my sister Bella, to say at this doggie hotel. They are going to let me and Bella stay in the same pen and we get to go out and play several times a day. I really like it there so I told mommy she doesn't need to worry about us while she's gone. Hope everyone else is having fun!!

Well, I haven't written in a diary before but I wanted to share this with everyone because I know other doggies out there are experiencing the same thing.
Several months ago, I believe around March, mommy started to worry about me because it seemed like I couldn't see well. When I was playing, I would lose sight of the ball and mommy would have to find it for me. I was also starting to bump into things. Mommy took me to the vet and Dr. Kerr said that I was starting to develop cataracts. He thought I was a big young for that and wanted to give it a little more time to see how quickly they were progressing.
In April mommy took me back to the vet to get my vaccines and Dr. Sykes and Dr. Kerr checked my eyes. They were both very worried because my cataracts had gotten worse. They told mommy to take me to Dr. English, an opthomologist, or eye doctor, for dogs. He must be a busy doctor because we had to wait nearly three months to go see him. Mommy said he only visits our town once a month and that's why he's so busy.
At the end of June we went to see Dr. English, who was so very nice! He looked at my eyes and gave me lots of cookies because I was a good boy. He told my mommy that he wanted to do and electroretinogram, or a test to look at my retinas. He said that part of my eyes were too hard to see by a regular exam because my cataracts were so bad. So mommy made an appointment for us to go see him at his office in another city.
In the middle of July, mommy and me went to see Dr. English at his office. Mommy had to leave me there for the day but I didn't mind because all the people were so nice. When mommy got back they told her that I had "inherited retinal degeneration." Mommy says that means that part of my eye is slowly disappearing and within the next year I won't be able to see anything anymore. The doctor told her that this problem isn't seen in boxers very often, but obviously does occur sometimes.
Mommy was very upset because the doctor said there was no way to fix it. I told mommy it was ok as long as I could hear or smell my tennis balls, I'd be fine. Mommy also told me that her daddy, my human grandpa, has a similar disease and he is going blind too. So I guess mommy knows a lot about my problem.
I'm doing ok, but I can't see anything at night now. I can get around my house fine but don't do so well when I go out. My little sister, who is normally really anxious, has calmed down some and started helping me a lot and I know my mommy loves me and will take care of me no matter what.
