My Tail of Devotion for Brandy (1975-1989)

Brandy, you've been gone so long now that its hard for me to remember a lot about you. At least I have this picture of the two of us to treasure!

Maybe I can't remember because I don't remember life without you. You came not long after I did, so we grew up together, on all fours, on the living room carpet. You were a cool pooch, specially since I do remember you taking turns on who's room you'd sleep in next, although you always favored Dad's side of the bed.

Never could understand what you ever saw in skunks. How come you never figured out that skunks don't play fair? As I recall, we had to give you at least 3 tomato juice baths, and you loathed every one. The most interesting "catch" you made was the baby skunk you proudly brought home in your mouth, then dropped at Dad's feet. You couldn't understand why you had to stay outdoors that night because you wouldn't drink the tomato juice. I wish you had made a better choice of perfume!

For some reason, us riding our Big Wheels down the hill into the driveway drove you insane. Was it something that happened to you before you came to live with us? You barked your angry bark, and ran up and down the run for a long time when we would play on our wheels.

You were such a good dog. You didn't need a leash to stay within our yard. You played nice with the neighbor dogs, even Tyler, the dog that belonged to the neighborhood, who would walk by our house 3-4 times a day, dragging his masters behind him.

I still think of you; sometimes, I can still smell your dog smell. I've never smelt it on any other dog, either. I'm just grateful to be able to be owned by you for your life. You were a great mutt.
