What a wonderful life . . . usually

Goodbye, dear Murray

Dear Dogster Diary,

I know some of you know I had a wonderful brother named Murray who was a really cool ferret. We had lots of good times wrestling and racing around, but he's left me.

Mama went into the ferret room to change play groups and when she got out Murray he kind of looked like he had an ear infection because his head was all tilted, but then she discovered he couldn't stand on his hind legs so she quickly treated him for insulinoma . . . giving him prednisone, fluids, something sweet to eat, and then some chicken baby food to encourage him to eat a healthy meal. Afterwards he played a little, and all that day we thought he was getting better because he ate 4 jars of baby food . . . but he never woke up the next morning. He'd slipped into a coma. Since he wasn't in pain mama chose to let him leave for the bridge from home. Mama wrapped him lightly in a soft blankie and put him on her lap and I lay beside mama w/ my nose on her lap so I could keep a close eye on my pal and encourage him to wake up. All day long we did this. Mama put him down beside her and got up to check our email. When she went back Murray was gone. He'd left w/o waiting for her and she's shattered. I was with him, but I'm not doing so hot either.

Murray died from kidney failure, which often throws a ferret into a coma. A couple of years ago there were a rash of ferrets w/ bad kidneys but no one lately. Why did our precious, playful Murray have to get so sick? it just wasn't fair. I know mama and I gave him a wonderful 2 1/2 years, but that's an awfully short life for a ferret.

As a result, Christmas wasn't as wonderful as it might have been. Sigh. But we can't control what nature brings, we just have to go on. Lots of my brothers and sisters are twice Murray's age. Mama's worried we might be in for a very rough year.

Belated Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year for all my friends on dogster. I love you guys!
