Arrival Story: After several months of playful begging and pleading, my husband finally decided we could get a dog. We went down to our local animal shelter where there was a beautiful black puppy who was at the mercy of a young child. The kid thought he was playing, the puppy didn't look sure sure about that. The child's parents called him away to look at a different dog, and I grabbed the puppy and told my husband he was the one.

Bio: Sabaka was with us for 11 years, passing away just a few weeks ago (it's currently the first week of June 2006). It was a COMPLETE shock. Apparently, he had developed a tumour in his abdoman that showed no symptoms and was not catchable by normal tests. One night, I noticed that his stomach was looking bloated and my husband took him to the emergency vet, who broke the bad news to us that the tumour had burst and Sabaka was hemmoraging inside. Our options were to put him to sleep or put him though surgery and chemotherapy, with no real assurance it would do much other than give him a few more months - and pretty miserable months, at that. We decided it was best to let him go - Sabaka was always easily befuddled and would NEVER have understood what was being done to him. My husband lovingly asked the doctor to give him something to help him be more comfortable and brought him back home to me so I could say goodbye. (I'm homebound, so I could go to the vet's office.) After some very tearful goodbyes, hubby took him back to the vet and stayed with him, looking into his eyes, until he'd gone.
When he was still alive, though, Sabaka was an amazing companion. He was probably the most gentle dog I've ever seen, and once he got past his teething stage, he never bit or nipped at anyone, and if he was using his mouth while play wrestling, he never clamped down hard enough to even feel the slightest bit of pressure. He was TERRIFIED of storms, and at times we even had to give him sedatives so he could get through the night without shaking constantly.
His favourite thing in the world was to be given treats, and he would often come into my room and just sit patiently beside me, imploring me with beautiful, pleading eyes to just give him something! He also loved to sit under desks - almost as if he were staying in a cave.
As you may be able to tell, Sabaka was very special to me, and I still feel the loss keenly. I just am glad to know he'll be waiting to see me when I get to the Rainbow Bridge...
