Waking up each morning. At her age, to pull this off is nothing short of miraculous.

Arrival Story:
I was desperate for a Wheetie and researched the breed for months before locating an impending litter. Drove from New York to see her in New Hampshire when she was five weeks old in the Spring of 1989, and again to collect her in June. We have been together ever since. Twice, she has seen me through tragic deaths of loved ones, always by my side to comfort me. Native NYers, we have moved together from NY to Rome, back to NY and finally to England, where we are at last permanently based. I can't imagine life without Hailey, and I am grateful to her for each life lesson she has taught me. She is our child, as we have none of our own.

Hailey is a true fighter in the best Terrier tradition. She is no genius, but she was endowed with an infectious high-spiritedness and sense of fun that more than compensated for whatever she lacked in intelligence. As my best friend, she was the only choice to be Flower Girl and witness at our wedding in 2000. (see photo) Despite having been pronounced "ready to be put down" by the vet over a year ago, she is still with us. Yes, she is thinner than she once was, and she is quite wobbly on her feet and basically blind, but this little dog will not give up on life! Contained in her little body is enough soul and spirit for ten men. She never complains and we marvel at her refusal to give up, but her bounciness has now gone, replaced by her steadfast determination to survive. At this point, each day she is with us is a bonus. We adore her and do our best to make her comfortable in her dotage. UPDATE: To our great sorrow, Hailey died peacefully in her sleep under her favorite lilac tree on Thursday afternoon, July 6th 2006. We will miss her forever.
