On Wednesday January 12th, my dear pal Max went on to doggie heaven. I loved him and he will be missed. He had a ruptured cancerous tumor. He is no longer in pain. Bless his heart.

My beautiful dog lived a good long life full of adventures and long walks and he was loved so much.

Cruciate Ligament Surgery Blog

August 17th, 2008

Dear Pup Pals and Dogsters,

On Sunday August 17th, 2008 I started to feel pain in my back leg. I pulled it up and didn't put any pressure on it. Then I lost my stride and stumbled a bit. My Mom noticed this and took me to the vet's on August 20th. Vet said he was pretty sure it was a cruciate ligament injury and the only way to check for sure was to sedate me and do the "drawer test". My Mom tried hard not to cry. I think she knew that the vet might be right. But on the bright side, if it was only a partial tear, it might even heal on it's own with complete crate rest for two weeks and some medication. So he told my Mom to try that first. She did and the two weeks came and went. Meanwhile my Mom was doing all sorts of research on the surgeries and the recovery, since it is a very expensive surgery and I am now over ten years old.

Sept. 21st, 2008 (Day 1, Week 1)

The day arrived for my sedation and the test for cruciate ligament injury. The doctor called my Mom and said that I had a torn cruciate ligament most definitely. We decided to do the surgery right there and then and get it over with.

Sept. 22, 2008 (Day 2)
My Mom was able to pick me up the next day from the vet's. I was very groggy from the anaesthetic, the painkillers , and I was very out of sorts. Didn't feel much like eating at all. That night I woke up and felt the pain of the incision. My Mom gave me some pain meds. By far this has been the most stressful day.

The vet phoned my Mom to tell her that the surgery went well, but that i have arthritis in my joints and I should have anti - inflammatory meds ongoing so that it helps the joints. Even though I am very trim and in shape the whole injury happened slowly over time, sort of a degeneration of the ligament due to the arthritis.

Sept. 23rd, 2008 (Day 3)

I had my morning meds and that was all, still not hungry. By dinner time, I was starting to get an appetite back and decided to eat my dinner. My mom was quite relieved about this.

Sept. 24th, 2008 (Day 4)

Now I am feeling a bit better, so I am eating breakfast too. My Mom is starting to get into a routine with me too.

Sept. 25th, 2008 (Day 5)

Still healing and resting.... lots of crate rest for me. In fact the vet told me I must rest my legs for at least 8 weeks.

October 5th, 2008 (Day 15)

To the vet's for suture removal today ! So far so good ! I am healing well and things are looking good. Dr. gives me a little bit more antibiotics to make sure there is no infection, when the bandage and wrapping are removed and the incision is exposed. I am eating normally and have an appetite again. In fact I might even like this cone on my head. It gives me a good shield when I try to steal the cat's food. Or when I am out in the yard, I don't feel the rain on my face. Ha Ha.

October 12th, 2008 (Day 22, Week 3)

Well, we went for a 5 minute walk outside my yard today. I got to mark my territory again and smell the grass. Wow it felt so good. I even put a little weight on my leg too. I am starting to walk a bit on it. But I don't think I should over do it, as it's still healing. Still have a ways to go. Next week I will be going for another vet check and to get a cartophen injection for my joints. I have been doing pretty good so far. Woof, woof for now.
