 Quick Bio:
 Birthday: May 4th 1998
Likes: To be treated like the SPOILED princess she is. This may, depending on her mood, include treat balls, Venison Treats, Balled up socks, snubbing when the mood strikes, plastic bottles, attention and of course...SNUGGLE!

Pet-Peeves: Being treated like a dog, being moved when she's trying to sleep, being picked up by people she doesn't like, being denied food, her medication, when boy dogs act "inappropriately" with her.

Favorite Toy: Dirty socks, treat balls, any bouncing ball, plastic bottles, any stuffed squeaky animal she can hunt and kill.

Favorite Food: she can only eat IVD Vension and Potato dog food and venison treats- She has severe IBD and is allergic to ANY AND ALL human food or doggy treats

Favorite Walk: anyplace as long as its outside! esp. the Grace Church yard on 11th and Broadway. She used to have a lot of doggy freinds but she doesn't have a dog walker anymore so she doesn't see her walking pals anymore. she's looking for new friends to play with

Best Tricks: Pretending she can't hear me or she has no idea what I'm talking about. i.e NO, STAY, COME HERE. Crazily stubborn like any other Westie/Terrier grrr!

Arrival Story: She picked me out. I wanted a BIG dog. I thought small dogs were silly.... esp white ones!

Bio: Piper has severe IBD similar to Crone's disease in humans. I bought her at a pet store-- yes-- horrible I know --but read on please...its called AMERICA KENNELS in New York City. NEVER BUY A DOG THERE. Never buy a dog at a pet store period. why did I do it? I had been going to shelters for months and couldn't find the right dog that either I bonded with or was the right "fit" for my lifestyle. I wanted the doggy to be happy in a NYC apt. and with my work schedule.
On the way back from yet ANOTHER trip to the North Shore Animal League my mother and I went into American Kennels to look at the puppies. I saw Piper. I had no idea what a westie was. I asked to see her and picked her up. Then there was that moment when you KNOW that is the right dog for you. So she was mine.
From week one she was throwing up , diarrhea the whole nine yards.. that got worse and worse. 5 vets said "oh Puppies do that." She was 6 months. time went on... and by the time she was almost 1 she was about 12 lbs, not growing, wouldn't eat and threw up and had accidents all over the place several times a day. She seemed like she was dying I finally took her to a GI specialist at the AMC ( ANIMAL MEDICAL CENTER ) here in NYC --the best animal hopsital in the country I think. I had already spent almost $2,000 on vets elsewhere that did nothing. Dr. John Broussard took one look at her and hospitalized her. He is a TOP specilaist in IBD and spends most of his time researching to find a cure.
She had an endoscopy which showed how severe it was. She was there for 2 nights. He put her on steroids ( prednisone) sulfasalazine, and aziorathiopine ( an immune system drug since her immune system is practically non-existent or similar to that of a person not a dog) i.e she licks the street or dirty water and she gets Giardia. A slight exaggeration but you get the point.
Dogs aren't supposed to lick the street and get sick!
Now, 7 years later she's almost fine except for some minor vomiting once a month or so.. she is off the steroids which is good. they are very bad for all dogs in the long run. He saved her life and I am eternally grateful.
if anyone has anyone stories similar to mine please share if you'd like... i am always looking for advice and new things/ideas to make her quality of life even better still.
I call her my "lemon" dog but I wouldn't trade her for anything.
bottom line- she came from a puppy mill obviously and was very sick when I got her.
The Mill is called "Thunder River Kennels" and is in ELK CREEK MISSOURI" where many puppy mills are located.
They have a very cute website but DON'T be fooled.
its called petpuppies.com
NEVER BUY from OR SPEAK TO THEM. she has "papers" but they are fake.
so that's her story...
luckily, it has a happy ending ..for now...
