Today I got into a very heated discussion with a few other members on another pet website involving animal cruelty and hitting a pet. How some people can say that is ok behaviour I can not even fathom. Then to continue to say that they hit their own dog and act like that is ok....I can not even understand how they could even think that.

This topic is so dear to me because of my precious Sharna. After years of being abused, bashed, hit, punched she some angel lead her to me. I believe there was a reason behind this, to show her not all humans are cruel. It took two years to get Sharna past all of her fears. Hitting does not fix beahviour, it creates new fear and issues. The thought of someone bashing my baby girl has me in tears, it broke my heart to see her terrified the first time we tried playing with her. I picked up a stick to throw it and she cowered in fear. I could not even hug my baby because she thought we would hit her.

How dare someone tell me that it is ok to hit a dog to teach them manners.

Sharna was only fully over all her issues for the last 6 months of her life, it was a long road and we got there eventually but no dog should ever have to go through that.

You are sooo right! Hitting only leads to fear. You cannot explain to a dog why you did that. All they know is hands mean pain.

I don't understand how anyone could be cruel to any animal, when all they do is love us no matter what. I'm so happy that you finally got such a good home,Sharna, it's a shame you did't get to stay for longer but at least you know your mummy loved you loads and loads, just like mine loves me.

How anyone could say it's all right to hit a dog is just beyond me. Way to go Sharna's mum, for trying to hammer it into these morons' heads that it most definitely isn't right to do that! Geez, I can't imagine how anyone could even THINK it was all right for one second!

I adopted Pogo 3 years ago this month, and even NOW, after all this time, she still shies away from me if I go to pull her towards me or to pat her on the head if she hasn't initiated it. It breaks my heart, but while I keep plodding along trying to show her that being close to me doesn't mean she's going to be hurt or hit or abused in ANY way, it's probably going to take the rest of our lives together to undo the damage that was done to the poor little soul during her first 6 months. Poor Sharna, I'm so sorry she had to know cruelty too before she came to you. xoxoxoxo
