   Leave a bone for Blair

BlairBear, the Blonde Bomber, Stinkie

Quick Bio:

Food. There's no question about that one. She can be a real porker when cheese or peanut butter or bananas are involved. Mind you, she's stopped eating her dog food...

Blair hates when Samantha naps in her bed. She will poke Samantha with her nose until Samantha gets annoyed enough to wake up and move. * Blair dislikes when Phoebe tries to get her to play... when Blair is trying to take a nap.

Favorite Toy:
A squeaky turkey leg.

Favorite Food:

Favorite Walk:
She used to love to walk to our neighborhood park. Sadly, she is too old to walk there now.

Best Tricks:
When she was younger, she would sing with me. Now that she's old, her best trick is going outside to do her business! I jest...

Arrival Story:
When I was born, my family had a German Shepard named Troll; she died when I was 8. By the time I was 9 1/2, I'd convinced (aka cried every night to) my Dad that we needed another dog. Our veterinarian heard that we were in the market for a dog "small enough to sleep in Allie's bed." It just so happened that he was trying to find a home for his ill sister-in-law's Cocker, who was living with him and his 3 large outdoor dogs at the time. My mother and I went to meet Bear, as she was called then, and it was love at first sight. Her long hair was matted and filthy from holding her own with the big dogs, but she was a sweetie! I'm 22 now, and she'll be 15 this year, but she's still my puppy. And when I come home from college to visit, she lights up, her whole demeanor changes, so it seems I'm still her human.

Blair is blind from cataracs and glaucoma. She knows her way around our house very well, though, and is in perfect health otherwise. Update 7/04: Blair will regain her joie de vivre when I return to living at home to help my mom deal with my dad's illness. I'm so excited to see and cuddle with my ol' dogs. Update 11/04: Blair definitely knows that Samantha is gone and has been extra attentive since Sam died. She must sense how upset we are about Sam, and I'm sure she misses her sister, too. Look for a new dog page soon; we'll be getting a puppy to take over where Sam left off, though no dog will ever take her place. 2/05: Blair has accepted Phoebe into the pack, as witnessed in the new pic in which she is chillin' in Phoebe's crate. Good girl, Blair. 5/23/05: we euthanized Blair today. She hadn't eaten in 5 days, and couldn't support herself well enough to walk. The decline was rapid, taking maybe 2 weeks. We thought it was the only humane to do.

'Flush or Faunus'

You see this dog. It was but yesterday
I mused forgetful of his presence here
Till thought on thought drew downward tear on tear;
When from the pillow, where wet-cheeked I lay,
A head as hairy as Faunus, thrust its way
Right sudden against my face, – two golden clear
Large eyes astonished mine, – a drooping ear
Did flap me on either cheek, to dry the spray!
I started first, as some Arcadian,
Amazed by goatly God in twilight grove:
But as my bearded vision closelier ran
My tears off, I knew Flush, and rose above
Surprise and sadness; thanking the true PAN,
Who, by low creatures, leads to heights of love.
- Elizabeth Barrett Browning, written for her Cocker Spaniel, Flush
