Arrival Story:
It was in the fall of 1997. I was young and did not know better, having just moved to New York City. Babi was a pet shop puppy, most likely from a puppy mill, I purchased from the now closed International Kennel Club located on 2nd Avenue in New York City. When I discovered in the years that followed more information about the horrors and atrocities that went on at puppy mills, I vowed that my next dog would be from a reputable and caring breeder. I am happy to say that Babi led a fairly healthy and happy life right up until her passing and was an only "child" showered with many hugs, kisses, and attention and nurtured in a loving home.

Bio:
hi everyone!! my name is babi. my astrological sign is cancer and i am an 11 year old maltese. i grew up in manhattan and i'm a city dog at heart! although i love walking around the city, my preferred method of travel is via my stylish carrier. that way, my mommy can practically take me anywhere she can! we ride in taxis and on the subway uptown and downtown. my favorite shopping district is soho as there are many dog-friendly stores there. living in the city really has it's many advantages, there are outdoor cafes that allow doggies to dine--some places even give free treats and provide me with my very own water bowl. there are also many dog sample sale events to go to where my mommy can shop for the newest in doggy fashions and accessories. I'm always interested in meeting new canine friends! Please add me to your Pup Pals list! =)

Tales of Babi and the City

My little Babi has crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge

My sweet, beloved Babi passed away last week on April 15th, in the early morning around 2:00am. I am terribly heartbroken inside since it happened. My home has never felt so strangely quiet and empty. It was very quick for her, and I hope it was as painless as possible. She had a ruptured artery in her heart that lead to a massive heart attack. My husband and I rushed her to a veterinary hospital with a ER department nearby, but it was her time to go. The ER team tried everything they could to save her, but her heart was too weak and it stopped beating.

Babi was diagnosed with an irregular heart beat when she was just a puppy. All these years we followed up on her condition diligently. She started having echocardiograms (ultrasound of the heart) when she was 8 years old. Beginning in March 2008, we put her on heart medication to try to control her heart from growing too large. Over this past year, her heart condition slowly worsened, but I still refused to believe she was getting so weak and old. You know dogs always seem like the same innocent puppy we bring home the first day. They also try to be strong for us by not letting us see their pain.

After returning back home from a trip to the West coast together, we noticed that she was coughing more and having trouble breathing. We took her to the vet who ran more tests. Chest x-rays of her heart showed the heart had grown over 20-25% in the past year and it was causing pressure on her lungs, making it hard to breathe, thereby causing excess fluid to develop. We started her on diuretic medication to ease extra fluids, but all this medicine still was not enough to keep her with us longer. The last two weeks were extremely tough because I was seeing her suddenly transform into a very feeble, tired, and sad dog. I really thought maybe she could live to see her 12th birthday this summer or even another 6 months maybe.

I was not expecting her to leave us so soon. Tuesday was such a great day for us. She could not go out anymore because she would get too excited for her heart and it was cold and rainy in New York City, typical April weather. For some reason, I had the dvd of the movie "Marley & Me" with Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson that I ordered from Netflix but had not watched yet. I decided that afternoon to watch it and she curled up next to me and was even responding to some of the sounds and barks from the dog playing the character of Marley. She even finished her meals that day and seemed in good spirits. When my husband came home late that evening, she even jumped off the sofa, ran to him and started happily barking. It was something she had not done for a few weeks. We thought she was getting better, but who knew she was going to leave us that night.

Looking back, I am glad that both my husband and I were awake when it happened because I have no "What ifs" or regrets because we tried everything we could do to bring her back and the fact that she was with us when it happened. I do not think I could live with myself if we had gone to bed and woke up the next day not being there for her.

I got Babi back in the fall of 1997, just a year after I moved to New York. She was a selfless and loyal companion, and part of my "New York experience". Through moving to different apartments around the city, boyfriends, college, meeting my husband, working, graduate school, throughout my entire 20's, the ups and downs, she was there. She was the constant or the anchor in my life that I could always fall back on. Now I will have to learn and explore the city through new eyes again and that will take some time I am sure.

WOWsers!!!! I'm the "DOG of the DAY"

WHOPEEEEEE~~~~Oh my gosh, I cannot believe this! I just got home and found out that DOGSTER has named me the "DOG of the DAY" this 10th of November, year 2006! I think mommy is more excited than I am because she has been worried sick about me the entire day. I've been at the vet all day. Here's the story...

This morning started off as any ordinary day. I woke up hungry and was waiting patiently by my automatic electronic pet feeder for breakfast. I actually know when the machine is going to beginning dispensing my food, which is twice a day, at 8:30am and at 8:30pm. Hehe...BUT...no food came out...That was when I knew something was wrong....=(

THEN mommy took me out for a walk, and I was slightly upset because I don't like to go on my walks with an empty stomach..Anyways, everything was fine UNTIL I realized we turned a corner and started heading towards my vet's office! UH OH....before I knew it I was quickly checked-in at the vet and then mommy disappeared and left me here BY MYSELF!!!! Abandoned me!!!

Luckily I don't remember what happened to me....I think they cleaned my teeth and pulled out one too, because I am now whimpering at home from the pain. A similar incident happened to me..back in 2004. Well, I'm home now, had a few snacks and am now nestled in my favorite pillow on the sofa and feeling kinda sleepy and very happy about being today's Dogster Doggie! It is the perfect ending to a fairly traumatic day....

Thank you Dogster! And thanks to all the doggies across the world that have invited me to be their Pup Pal and join their Dogster groups!

WAAAAAA I'm on a diet now! =(

I'm getting fat. I was hoping my mommy wouldn't notice. Mommy was rubbing my belly the other day and suddenly she exclaimed to daddy, "Oh my gosh, our little girl is getting pudgy! Whatever should we do?????"

Well, it's not really my fault because they are the ones that feed me!!!! I'm too short to raid the fridge or tip over our trash can. I tossed and turned and couldn't sleep all night wondering..."WHY me! How did this disaster fall upon me?? What's going to happen next?" And so on. The next morning it became clear to me that the culprit is all the sinfully delicious baked foie gras and bacon cookies from Tom Keller's Bouchon Bakery located in the Time Warner building in NYC. Mommy has been feeding me TOO MANY of them for my doggy size. I just bat my lashes and do a downward doggy stretch and she can't resist me!! Works EVERYTIME! hehehehehe... I'm usually only 7 lbs. Okay fine, a bit closer to 8 then. After all a female never reveals two things in life. Her age and her weight.

*Sigh* So now it's back to hard kibble ONLY. And I waited eagerly at my electronic automatic pet feeder this morning for breakfast and OMG there is less food coming out then yesterday!!!!! *Dismay* I'm sure dinner is going to be the same. When will this nightmare end????? I'm so hungry.

Just thought I would share my pain with you all....=(
