Likes:
He loves attention and cuddling, and is constantly demanding it from everybody! He also loves sitting on people's laps and car rides.

Pet-Peeves:
Popeye's an easy going boy who always has a huge smile on.. if anything bugs him it's probably when I leave him at home instead of bringing him along with me.

Favorite Toy:
He loves his stuffed 6ft. snake/serpent stuffed animal, his various kongs and his shark.

Favorite Food:
He was once a picky dog, now he's a big fan of garbage surfing - he'll eat almost anything he can find. I think his weak spot is pizza.

Favorite Walk:
He loves any walk, but loves walking through tall grass and shrubs that rub on his belly.

Best Tricks:
Popeye's tricks are all impressive, as he responds to them all through American Sign Language. My favorite is high five and his favorites are walk and treat.

Arrival Story:
I found Popeye on petfinder.com, where he was being held at a private shelter in L.A. - Diamonds in the Ruff. He had been rescued from the pound just hours before he was to be put down, the pound had not realized he was a deaf dog, they thought he was disobedient. Popeye has a sad history of starvation and abuse, but has overcome his sad past wonderfully with me. I fell in love with him the moment i met him! We've been inseparable since January 31st 2004, and he has since become quite the pampered pooch.

Bio:
Popeye is the happiest little guy I've ever met! He has no clue he's deaf, nor does he know he's a big man... so he's pretty goofy and keeps me laughing. He's also amazingly smart, most recently he has taught himself to open the garbage can, open the oven, the cupboards, the closet and even used a step stool to reach a shelf with his bones! He's a wonderful indoor dog, he sleeps a ton, and is usually curled up in my bed, under the covers. I often wake up to his snoring and find we're sharing my pillow and we're nose to nose. He's a very social guy and loves meeting new people, on his walks he has a smile from ear to ear and specifically goes out of his way to say hi to people.

a bump in the road

In april 09 Popeye was diagnosed with two types of cancer, one that's not so bad and one that is... we had both masses surgically removed, but there's a chance we didn't get all of one tumor because of its bad location. We started oral chemotherapy in addition to his weekly acupuncture treatments to take a pro-active stance against his fibrosarcoma coming back. A month into his treatment he developed a horrible and rare reaction to his chemo meds and we had to stop all treatment while he heeled. About two months have passed, and we're just getting ready to try a new drug to fight his cancer.
Popeye's a strong, brave boy, and his spirits are always high, so we're very optimistic. He's about 6 1/2 years old, and we're nowhere ready to part yet, so we've decided we'll do everything possible to fight his cancer. This is just a little bump in the road, but it reminds me to enjoy and savor every minute I have with him.. if possible, I love him even more now than I did before.

My Tail of Devotion for Popeye

I remember 2 1/2 years ago when I adopted you, how I found your cute face on petfinder, the description saying you were the perfect mix of brains and looks, a goofy boy who'd win me over with his charm, a deaf boy who only wanted love. 5 minutes into meeting you and I was in love as all 90 lbs of you sat on my lap smiling. You changed my world, you've made me a better person, every morning I wake up to that big face of yours sharing my pillow and I fall in love all over again. We've learned sign language together, had to over come to the rude looks and mean comments because some see you as a threat, a vicious pitbull, but I would never let anyone hurt you, let anyone take you away, and if bsl comes near us, we'll move. I will fight for you, for your rights, and the rights of all animals. I like to think together we can change peoples minds about pitbulls, we'll fight bsl together, as one person at a time falls in love with you, just like I did. I talk to you constantly, I know you can't hear me, but I know you can read my body language. You have made me the happiest girl, the luckiest girl, and not a day goes by where I don't almost cry thinking about your horrible past and what you've had to go through. I love you, I adore you, I cherish every minute with you, and I will spoil you and never leave your side until the end Popeye.

This is a special Tail of Devotion
