Retrieving but only in the house, following mommy, playing with Cassie his sister
Anyone daring to come in the house outside of immediate family, having a cat as a brother
Currently his squeaky newspaper -- alltime was purple quaking raccoon which is sadly no longer with us. Duncan's little sister Cassie shredded him.
Coconut Cookies, warm buiscuits, chicken breast and LiverSnaps and people coming in the door he doesn't know.
In the backyard. Although he prefers sitting in his lay-z-boy recliner
Duncan is the 4th dog of a family of wolf-dogs that have adopted us as their pack. His great-grandmother Hamlet Princess of Denmark (1/2 redwolf 1/2 husky) was my first dog. His grandfather Rhett Butler (son of Hamlet and King who was 1/2 German Shepherd 1/2 gray wolf) was my dog for 11 years and Duncan's uncle Ivanhoe (Rhett's son) was my dog for all too short a time. All of his ancestors have gone to the Rainbow Bridge. When Rhett went to the Rainbow Bridge in September 1998 I called around to find out if anyone who had any of his pups had any puppies. Duncan was 10 weeks old and the only boy left at one of Rhett's daughter's home. I was so happy to go get him. He was a beautiful black furball and could've been Hammie's twin except he was a boy. He was so happy to see me when I first got there to pick him up it was like he was waiting for me. He never cried as we left and licked me all the way home. He's my darling boy and is just a big baby. When he moved into home, he met Scarlett his new doggie mommie. She was a 10 year old Australian Cattle Dog and mommied and spoiled him for 4 and a half years before she went to live with her beloved Rhett at the Rainbow Bridge. Duncan missed her very much.
Maternal GreatGrandparents: Hamlet Princess of Denmark and King; Maternal Grandparents: Rhett Butler and Lady Logan (a golden retriever); Parents: Shawna and Mac (a black lab who came in from somewhere but I'm glad he did). I only know about Dunky's maternal line. He lives with a cat brother Smokey (age 4) which insults Duncan very much; and a little sister Cassie (age 14 months) who thinks she is his boss. He pays her little mind. He loves his little sister though and is very VERY protective of her.
Duncan is king of the house -- at least he thinks he is. Holding court from his recliner. He's a spoiled fluffy puppy and plans to stay that way!

I'm writing Duncan's last diary entry because he isn't around to "dictate" it himself. I am posting the email that i sent out to family and close friends on October 31, 2009 here. After 4 1/2 months, it's still just as raw and his chair is just as empty.
________________________________________________________ ________October 31, 2009:
Duncan passed away this morning peacefully on his own this morning at 11:00 a.m EST. He had had a fairly good week this past week, even getting frisky and going up stairs occasionally. He had a good day yesterday and had hamburger for dinner -- he's not been eating his dog food well since he was in the hospital. We had went out twice this morning, the last at around 10. I had started to give him his pain medicine and antibiotic. He took the first pill but would not take the other. I usually give him his meds in cheese because he likes that but he wouldn't take it. He laid over on his side, took a few deep breaths and was gone. He and I were alone in the dining room when it happened.
Duncan was always one to do his own thing, and he did this last thing, as well, on his own terms when he was ready. My heart is broken as I write this. He was my baby ... the last in the line going back to my first dog/wolf hybrid. I know that he is happy and whole now, not in pain, at the Rainbow Bridge with his "mommie" Scarlett and meeting those great members of his bloodline -- HamletJean, Rhett, and Ivanhoe who came and went before him.
I will miss his love of car rides, the way he would go get his leash and bring it to me when he was ready to go ride in the car. I will miss his ferious protectiveness of Mom and Cassie and me ... the way he wouldn't let people in the door even when I wanted to let them. I will miss him sitting sentry in HIS chair by the window ... on guard, ever watchful. But I will most miss the look of absolute love he would give me. I would find him in many different places, just watching me with that look. He was my shadow ... even after his ligament rupture of October 3, he would still try to follow every step I made. He always did.
Duncan left me today in body, but he lives on in my heart for all time.

That is me in a word. Mortified. I do NOT like going to the vet. It is a humiliating experience for a macho wolf-doggie like me. Dr Jan said I had an ear infection ... well ok. People get ear infections and dogs are people too you know. BUT have you ever ... ever ... EVER in your life heard of making someone bald because of an ear infection?? I had not ... but oh at the vet they have. Said I had hotspots which formed because I had an ear infection. Had a lot of hotspots soooooooo they shaved me. I am naked. Naked I tell you. But more mortifying than being naked is that they left me some hair ... SOME. They gave me a POODLE cut. I have a PUFF tail. Me! Can you believe this! I should have bit someone, I'm telling you. But they sedate me when I am at the vet so I can't bite anyone. Momma says they make me a happy drunk. They take the fun out of everything.
But it was wrong wrong wrong of them to make me look like this. Momma says I'm still beautiful but I know the neighbors -- Milo, Apollo & Johnny -- were laughing at me. Barking laughs. And Cassie ... well okay Cassie is a dingbat, she didn't even notice anything.
But it is mortifying I tell you. Just mortifying!

Of course, I already knew that. Mommie however showed me how special I am tonight when she brought home a portrait of me. Yes, she had me painted, and I didn't even know it. Looks just like me if I say so myself. I'm in my chair holding court over the house, watching to see who's coming into my domain and ready to protect us all if need me. Mommie said I was regal looking ... but of course. I am the King of the house.
