Arrival Story:
We received a call from the Bloomington, Indiana Shelter, that they had a little female setter there and if I would be able to take her in as a foster. I already had a foster dog coming, but decided--well, since she's so close to Indy, I can't leave the poor pup sit there. They told me she was about a year old. I went to pick her up on a Tuesday evening. She had just had her little girl surgery and was all dazed from the anesthesia still. When they brought her out and put her in my arms I was gasping---she was such a tiny thing and so cute. I took my little dazed bundle of 24 pounds to the car and drove her home. She was sooo out of it...wouldn't even sit down. We brought her home and she took two days to fully come out of her haze. She seemed shy at first, hid under the end tables and cautiously explored the house...but with her fur siblings and with us she appeared a spunky, happy-go-lucky pup. It took only about a week for us to know we were flunking. Only 10 days before I emailed my rescue to tell them that we would like to adopt little Sashi.

Sashi has been so much fun to watch. She's so happy when she runs out in the yard, early in the morning, or after you come home at night. She loves to hunt birds, but is crazy about chasing bugs. She leaps after butterflies, crunches up June bugs and chases flies in the house. She's been taking swimming lessons from little Ginger. I don't know that Ginger really likes all the competition in the neighbors pool. Ginger tries to jump in to get balls and then take a rest on the rafts. Sashi tries to wrestle Ginger on the rafts and in the water, it's a hoot to watch. Our newest little addition to the family still has lots to learn and we're starting her obedience class sessions next week, but she's surely wiggled her way into our hearts in a flash, about as quickly as she can jump into our laps. If you are thinking of giving an English Setter a home, please consider adopting from an English Setter Rescue. We currently foster for Illinois Birddog Rescue. Check out their website at: - They are also always in need of good foster homes!!

Last night mommy took me for a ride. We went to the home of one of mommy's friends, Theresa, and I met her fur girl Lucy, a little border collie mix. I was surprised, because Lucy is even smaller than I am. I sniffed out the entire house and then the door bell rang and one of mommy's other friends, Janice, came in with her setter boy Sebastian. I needed to check out the situation for a bit in safety and laid down in the corner of the kitchen behind a chair. Mommy told me that we are meeting every week and will do our own little private class among friends, since Janice is a dog trainer and can help us along with everything. We had lots of fun during class, though everything was a bit overwhelming for me. There is so much to learn. I was just trying to get some treats, but mommy would not give them to me right away---only sometimes when I did certain things and she told me "good girl". I'm not quite sure yet what I did to get the treats, but mommy says we will practice every night and I'll soon figure it out. I heard mommy talk to Janice and mommy sounded very happy. I guess I'm always so busy looking around and chasing bugs that mommy thought I wouldn't be attentive during class, but she thought I did pretty well. After class I got to go out into the backyard and sniff around and chase some June bugs. Lucy and Sebastian started playing a bit, but I didn't want to get in on it just yet. I do love to wrestle though, so I'll have to see if I can play with them next time a little bit. Mommy, Theresa and Janice had some rice crispy treats---and I thought all treats were meant for puppies...but I guess humans like them as well. We drove home afterwards and it was already dark and there was some thunder and lightning, but I'm not scared of it like my brother Casey and foster brother Curly are. We played inside when I got home. It was odd to only be the three of us, because Katie and Ginger had a sleepover at the neighbor's house and didn't come home until the next morning. Can't wait to go to class again. The treats are sure yummy. I especially like the liver paste Janice had for me. I will write more later.
