Arrival Story:
My husband had heard that there was a springer spaniel at the animal shelter in our little town in Michigan. We decided to take a look at her....however when we got there, the shelter was not open yet and I had to drive my husband to the airport to leave town for a week. He told me "Go back and look at her---don't take ANY other dog, either her or none". I went back to the shelter that was now open and was led to her Kennel area. There was a young yellow lab dancing in front of me all cute and eager to please. Katie was in the very back corner of the kennel---looking down, trying not to be seen, not responding. The shelter worker told me to wait in the outside run area and he would bring her to me. He came with her on his arm and put her down in front of me. There she was---sitting with all four paws crammed as closely together as possible, as to take almost no space. She was looking down and was not to be convinced to look at me. I had never owned a dog. The guy from the shelter said that she was an owner turn in. She showed signs that she had been abused. He couldn't say if she would get over it and would be alright. She had not been kept in the house either. To stimulate her, he started taking her leash and lead her around the yard and after five minutes he had me take over the leash and Katie actually walked on and looked at me. I decided to take the plunge---I didn't know how it would be, but I would try. I signed all the papers and led her to my car. As soon as I opened the car door, Katie became a different dog. She got excited, jumped into the car, tried to jump into my lap---I could hardly drive. I had gained a friend for life.

Bio:
Katie took about a year to get over her worst fears of abuse. She was not hand-shy, but was afraid of feet. Evidently she had been kicked and every time you would run into her by accident, she would turn over and show her belly and be very submissive. She would also run and hide when you raised your voice, or when you swatted a fly with a newspaper. She also had mortal fear of stairs. Other than the newspaper fly swatting, which we now avoid, she's gotten behind all her fears. You cannot tell anymore, how dismal her first 10 months as a puppy were. We did go through some rough spots, with some separation anxiety and chewed up items, but it was all worth it for this girl. People line up to dog-sit her and we have a list of about five people that would take Katie into their family if anything would happen to us. We also were surprised to discover that Katie is actually the ultimate Alpha female and loves to mother younger dogs and takes care of them. She's been a wonderful companion to us and has welcomed our other fur kids and now foster pups gladly into the family after being an only child for 6 years.

Our dear Katie went to the bridge peacefully in May 2009. We still miss her so much. She was the most incredible girl and we were so blessed to have her as part of our family.
