Tonite Mimi received an especially thoughtful post from another who knows great loss and suffering, especially when it concerns our tiniest and most innocent beings...Our Pets. She was prompted to recall where it was she learned the language of sorrow and consolation....she thinks it comes from us....she believes we are angels, pure and without sin...the only beings in whom God has entrusted the message of uncondiional love.
So it was that she sat down to write this poem that heartbreaking day in June 1998 when I closed my eyes for the last time.

"I had a tiny box, a precious box
Of human love--my spikenard of great price;
I kept it close within my heart of hearts,
And scarce would lift the lid lest it should waste
Its perfume on the air. One day a strange
Deep sorrow came with crushing weight and fell
Upon my costly treasure, sweet and rare,
And brake the box to atoms. All my heart
Rose in dismay and sorrow at this waste;
But, as I mourned, behold a miracle
Of grace divine. My human love was changed
To Heaven's own, and poured in healing streams
On other broken hearts, while soft and clear
A voice from above me whispered, "Child of Mine,
With comfort, wherewith thou are comforted,
From this time forth, go comfort others,
And thou shalt know blest fellowship with Me,
Whose broken heart of love hath healed the world."
from Streams In The Desert, Vol.5

The Good Old Days

Sigh....I guess I don't ever get to go back to Austin ever again. J.J. won't fit in Mimi's purse and he don't like Rock 'n Roll and Texas music like I do. He just wouldn't understand what SXSW means to so many. He might like listening to Jimmie Dale sing "Santa Fe Thief" or Joe Ely's "Whenever Kindness Fails" or Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks' "My Old Timey Baby". And I betcha he'd like the green, green grass around Barton Springs and all that cold, clear water. So many memories of concerts and tequila nights, 6th Street, steak nachos and black beans.

Those were the good old days when it was just Mimi and Me in Mimi's purse.

I miss you, Austin, Texas!

The Chosen One

It was all about me,me,me,me,me! Or so I thought! Then my Mimi did a very strange thing. One day she came in from work with a weird black & white mutt trailing behind she called "J.J." He just walked right into my house, slumped down on the carpet and kept his head bowed for weeks. She claimed to have rescued him from a bunch of louts who had rejected him. No wonder, he was a rat terrier, not a weenie dog! Well, I just gathered up all my toys into a pile at the other end of the room and glowered at both of them. I like a good snit!
Over time, this "other dog" gradually won my heart over. He respected my space, and didn't try to eat my food or steal my toys or take away my Mimi. He really was quite amazing....his sunlit eyes and spring-loaded legs. The squirrels that used to tease me and the menacing cat next door...he chased them all away out of my yard. He became my hero. When the house burned and I nearly died, he didn't leave my side for weeks. When Mimi got sick and had to be in the hospital, I got so depressed without her there. He tried to cheer me up every day even though I know he was sad too. That's when I knew "J.J." was My Brother. (to be continued)
